Gerbera enthusiasts, I need your help!
I bought a potted Gerbera daisy a few months ago, and it's been surviving pretty well. However, last week when I was in Chicago, I left my Gerbera outside to let the rain take care of it (really not a good move, now that I'm reading that they thrive best in drier conditions) and it was pretty much close to dying.
I moved it into a sunnier spot where the rain can't reach it and found this growing, but is it just a weed? I'm afraid I'm not skillful enough to id the plant by its leaves.
Is this a weed?
Looks like dandelion to me.
Whelp. That's a huge bummer.
Let it grow and see what it becomes. Dandelions are edible if that what it turns out to be. :~) It could be the daisy but for me it's hard to tell because I'm finding too many variations on shape.
Could it be a Transvaal Daisy? Gerbera hybrid?
Dandelion (Taraxacum) has lobes on the leaves that often point back toward the base of the plant. Not always, but often enough that I think this plant is not Dandelion.
I suppose then I'll just wait it out and see what grows. The tag that came with it said that the flower was "mixed", but I thought it referred to mixed flower colors.... Thanks for your feedback!
I think it's the real Gerbera BUT can also see where Diana is coming from re Dandelion.
Best and quickest way to find out for sure, Remove the plant from the pot gently, turn it upside down and look at the root, a Dandelion that size would have a longer TAP root, where as, the Daisy plants have loads of smaller spread out roots.
While the plant is ouit the pot, IF your happy it's a Gerbera, then gently remove some of the soil from the root area, refill the pot with fresh compost for seed growing as this will be more free draining. reset the plant back into the new soil and place in a light BUT NOT direct sunlight, allow the plant to settle down for a few days and then water the pot from below, let the pot sit in a saucer of water for an hour, the soil with change a darker colour when it has taken up enough water.
Set the pot aside to let ALL the water drain away then, set it back to where it was in the light position
dont let the plant sit in saucers of water other than for watering and only for a short time. Dont allow water to be sat on the foliage as this causes rot, (your brown dead leaves are too much water on the foliage hence watering from under the pot to prevent water drops on leaves.
After several weeks you should see NEW regrowth, give a half strength dose of indoor plant / Tomato plant feed, to give it a little boost, never over feed or you can burn the roots and do more harm than good.
Hope this helps you out a little and helps once you know IF the plant is a true Gerbera.
Good luck.
Kindest Regards. WeeNel.
Thanks for your advice, WeeNel!! I'll see how this goes.
Keep us posted on it. :~)
