O.K., I need a little help here. My newest blackberry planting was a couple years ago. I bought and planted just a couple plants ($$ expensive). Of course they had a couple huge berries on them when purchased, which caught my attention. Well last year I had a couple berries. Obviously not quantity producers. Now, the brambles are close to bloom, but the tender part of the plant is rolling up and I don't know what the problem is. I unfurled one of the leaves but did not see a problem. Any thoughts??? Should I cut that part off and hope it takes care of the problem?
Thanks in advance!
Arapaho blackberry leaf problem
The whole blackberry genus (Rubus) is subject to a lot of pests. You might look at your local university or dept of agriculture site to learn about problems local to you.
You did right to unroll a leaf and look for pests, webbing or other signs.
Is it just a few leaves here and there?
Or most of the leaves on just one branch?
Are the leaves wilting and rolling? Or are they still firm? Are they discolored?
Some plants roll or fold their leaves when they lack water. There might be water in the ground, but some pest has bored into the stem and is reducing the water supply to those leaves.
Here is an example of a web site that might help. It is in CA, though, and some of the pests may be different. Many are the same, too. Might find out some info here.
