Help! does anybody know why sunflower leaves are starting to wilt and turning black at the tip like that? I have attached a picture below.
Thank you very much if you can help me. This is my first time growing sunflower and this happens. :(
sunflower leaves turn black
Those are the seed leaves, the cotyledon, which will dry up and fall off anyway, as the true leaves enlarge and multiply. I'm not sure if there's really anything to worrry about there with what's happening to them. It would certainly be a bad sign if this started happening to the true leaves.
the seed leaves have already wilted away and the same thing is happening to these true leave but i don't know why :(
Have you fertilized them?
My personal opinion is the tiny plants are in too large a pot, large pots need more soil and in turn more soil need more water to wet it. when you separate seedlings, it's always better to move them up a pot size only when the roots have filled the first little pot up from the first germination stage if that makes sense.
The little leaves look like they have either had water droplets onto them or they have been exposed to wet AND sun together.
Dont begin to do any feeding to these little seedlings, all seeds and bulbs have by nature all the goodness they need for germination AND the development till the are able to grow a good few roots.
after the roots are WELL formed would you add any feed IF required.
As you probably know, the sunflowers are fast growing plants from germination to flowering, so when planted out, add lots of humus to their planting holes and make sure you water them often at the root area, because these plants have little hairs on stems and foliage any water droplets cling to the hairs and cause fungal diseases, Mould etc and browning of the foliage so always water lots around the roots.
Hope this helps you out.
Good luck.
WeeNel.
