Time to transplant cucumbers??

San Antonio, TX

I am growing cucumbers (first time) under lights indoors. They are only 5 days in and already getting huge! Hard to tell from the photo but they are about 2 inches tall. When is it time to transplant them outside to a bigger container?

i am thinking you could get them planted outside right away, with you being in TX and it gets so warm so early in the year down there. I am up here in VA, a couple of zone climates colder than you and i have mine growing outdoors already :)

Great. Thank you. What do you know about Kale? I have some also in the house under lights. They are much smaller and have not gotten any true leaves yet.

Kale are actually cooler weather plants, and will begin to lose quality if placed in hot weather (over 80F)

Good information. Thanks again. Maybe they will stay in the house this summer.

i say why not, just keep them under those grow lights the whole time ;)

I transplanted my cucumber seedlings in container outside, but it was raining everyday and they got root rot and died. They are really sensitive to water when they're small.

As long as the soil temp is 60 degrees, your cucumber plants should be fine.

I always direct-sow my cucumber seeds right into the spot they'll be growing. They grow so fast, it's really not necessary to plant them in a pot first unless you like growing them that way.

There are different opinions about when to plant kale. Some say you can plant it any time and others say it gets bitter if the temps are too hot. I've never personally grown it so I can't give you my own opinion, but I thought the info in the below link was interesting.

The person that wrote the info said they don't even bother to plant it any more. They just let some plants go to seed and let the seeds drop. That way they always have kale growing.

I'm in Fort Worth. The only things I start indoors are tomatoes and peppers. Everything else is direct sown in the garden.
