I recently rooted some Meyer lemons from seed, out of a store bought lemon. I'm not looking for lemons to grow, if it happens it happens, just wanted some pretty indoor trees. I'm getting a lot of conterversial information on their care and would appreciate some pointers. I know about root pruning and stuff to keep them indoor trees as they grow, but with light and watering it seems everyone has far different opinions. Sure it was only 50 cents for the lemon, but I care for my plants like I care for my children, each one is special and I don't want to kill them
Lemon Tree seedlings, not above dirt but growing like crazy
In the garden (where they do not freeze) they are large, awkward shrubs. Full sun, thorough irrigation then do not let them go too dry between watering. They need a complete fertilizer (depending on what is already in the soil) including trace minerals. Lemons can be trained as single trunk trees (if you can find one that is well started in that direction) or multi-trunked trees (shrubs with some thinning of the lower branches)
In a container (still outdoors) lemons can be trimmed to be OK in something at least 25 gallons (like half an oak barrel), though they will eventually outgrow it.
As a house plant I would give it as close to full sun as possible, great drainage, and mild doses of fertilizer. There are a few VERY dwarf citrus that do make reasonable house plants, but I would not include lemon in this group. If you have a sun room, or a garden room where you can let them get a bit larger that would probably be a lot better than trying to keep them too small.
Have fun with it while you can, but do not be discouraged if you end up getting rid of it.
