Heard about the problems on Bay Bridge while listening to the traffic report on the way home and was afraid that the two of you were part of the back-up. Sorry for your long trip home.
Spring 2015 Plant Swap Discussions - PART TWO
Oh, no! I'd feel so trapped sitting in that bay bridge traffic.
It was wonderful to meet you! Hopefully we'll see you again at the fall swap (with much better travel conditions!).
Gita, I put the Day Lillies in the ground tonight. Broke that clump up into 4 parts. I felt like I was murdering them while cutting them apart... But I know from past experience that Day Lillies are survivors. I once dug one up and transplanted it and a month later, I had a small Day Lilly there again, must have left a tiny part of the root behind. So I'm sure these guys will make it just fine.
Thank you again !
SSG, that's the jewelweed -- Impatiens somethingorother. I think it's the spotted one, not the yellow (blooms are orange & yellow). Some call it touch-me-not bec. the seedpods explode. :-)
Oh, got it! Thanks, Jill!
Cam---
I am glad you did not have to go through the hosing off--cutting apart--
dividing the roots, etc...
Chopping it in pieces is what I would have done. Takes guts--but it works better...
I hope they spread for you nicely--they DO!
If you want more--I am sure by the fall Swap I can give you some.
Gita
jeanniejayne, that's terrible! Driving 1 mile per hour for 3 hours would drive me nuts!
I'm sorry you had to go through that, but so glad you came. Did you find out why the traffic was so backed up?
There was an accident on the normally west bound span, which closed it. As a result, the normally east bound span was pressed into two-way service. When this happens they limit traffic to only one lane in each direction to prevent head-on crashes that would close the remaining span. One lane east bound on a mid-spring Saturday instead of three lanes is almost like the bridge being closed.
Gita... yeah, I'd say you have plenty of Day Lillies there. :)) Wow.
Thanks again, I put the ones you have me near the edge of the bed where I just put the Crape Myrtle. Should look nice combined with the big white blooms on the Natchez.
((pretty unusual daylilies))
Thanks for posting that impatiens pic SSG; I think you may have just identified a NOID seedling growing in my front yard garden. I've left it as I usually do when I don't recognize a seedling. If that's what it turns out to be, then I'll leave it for sure. Not sure how in the world it would have gotten there though since there isn't any anywhere close to it. It might not live though. It's struggling for it's life because it's getting choked out by all the plants in that bed....LOL
As enthusiastically as jewelweed self-sows, its saving grace is that it's very shallow-rooted and easy to pull up. That probably also makes it easy for other plants to choke out. The soft/tender leaves and juicy/crisp stems make it easy to ID (once you know it) also. :-)
I pulled up some of the over-abundant jewelweed in my yard today and will plant it in the woods tomorrow. I'll transplant some to the shady areas of my yard where nothing else will grow. I love that plant!
Does anyone recognize this plant? It was one of the "free-to-good-home" swap plants, and it was in a plastic bag labeled "tall flower" or something like that. It looks familiar but I can't place it. As you can see, I'm giving it a good home : )
I took some too I think, was it proposed to be Rudbeckia triloba?
I took some too. My guess is Ratibida pinnata, Gray-headed Coneflower: https://www.google.com/search?q=ratibida+pinnata&biw=1600&bih=784&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=5-NVVdCsH8WmgwTEsoDAAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CIgBEIke .
That was one that Marta brought (my friend from Joyanna's ballet class). She said she was sorry she didn't know the name but had to share it anyway because it was just so pretty... I'll have to ask her what color the blooms are, though, because I don't remember! I'm hoping she'll jump in here soon.. maybe she has a photo.
She asked me about one plant yesterday that I don't remember seeing at the swap, so I don't know who brought it. Arching, sword-shaped foliage and small purple flowers with yellow centers -- not crested iris, and the leaves were too broad for spiderwort -- could it be Virginia bluebells?
Thanks GT and Sally, now I have an idea of the height and color at least!
Critter, yes any additional info would be great!
My 'Marta" plant was plopped in a cup, and a bit of soil tossed in, here in the shade with dribbles of water, in others words somewhere between ignored and abused...and is growing like mad!
I'll pop on later but I've got a couple of NOID pots that maybe y'all can help me find the name for...till then...enjoy this amazing day (soooo wish it was 5 pm already)...ok...done with lunch...back to work
Hey girl--I joined the ranks of the Working Full Time this year, you have my sympathy!!
I'll ask her, GT. The photo on her phone seemed to show wider leaves than that, but it was hard to tell. Thanks!
Now that my "copy" of Muddy's mystery plant has matures some, I'm thinking Rudbeckia laciniata, Green-headed Coneflower. All three suggested IDs are yellow coneflowers several feet in height.
We are just now, having a huge T-showers downpour.
Seriously, heavy rain! G.
Same system that came through here earlier... perfect rain for well over an hour. Steady, then downpour, then a nice soaking rain. Not only do I love plants, I'm serious about my lawn so... YAY !!!!! Hope you get as much as we did, Gita... or more !
It was raining pretty hard for a while, but we didn't get so much that I regret watering today!
Speaking of Rudbeckia mysteries, what do you make of this strange little plant? The flower is only about 2" above ground level...nope that's no typo - 2"..my hand is resting on the ground in these photos! The leaves between my fingers in the second photo seem attached to the same plant. There is a Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' next to it, but it doesn't look like a Goldsturm to me.
What a cutie, Muddy!
Did anyone bring a blooming or budding spiderwort to the swap? I thought it was too early for them but saw blooms at green springs earlier, so I'm thinking that's the one Marta was asking me about.
Glad to have a better ID on Marta's mystery "tall flower" GT!
Gita, I've read that they might bloom again if you cut them back.
I didn't finish planting my "take" from the swap, but I got a lot done. I planted the Tiarella cordifolia 'Susquehanna' from Sequoia around the Dodecatheon meadia (Shooting Star) to fill in the empty spot that will be left when the Shooting Star's foliage dies back.
The Tiarella to the far right is 'Running Tapestry'.
I think I got some of those from you; if so, no worries, they look beautiful and that color will go very well in the area where they're planted.
Available at the garden party
Bring your shears if you would like to take some fig cuttings. I have three figs that got knocked back and are sprouting like mad. I was going to prune them but don't have time to make cuttings and I hate to let them go to wasted.
