Spring 2015 Plant Swap Discussions - PART TWO

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm sure she'd love a Sun Sugar! I found my seeds, but since yours had a good start over any that I might have managed to sow last weekend, I'll save my seeds for next spring. :-) It's a "garden candy" plant, for sure. The kids will raid hers when they are at her pool and mine when they're playing here!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG not sure if there is still one Sun Sugar seedling avail but I've got my hand up if you have one. Thanks

Aspenhill I'd like to try one of your epimediums and a tricyrtis 'Dark Beauty'

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, you got the last one!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--and Jill--

Sun Sugar tomato is now a regular item Bonnie's brings to us.
They are a small growing...but it seems that is just their way....
Also--Sweet 100's"..a small cherry tomato--prolific...

Remember--the next sale will start on 4/30 and , probably, go all week
until Wed, night. 4" and 5" pots of any veggie or herb will be on sale
...again... 4 for $10. SO--$2.50 each. (Reg. $3.68).

I even saw Mortgage Lifter tomatoes the other day. A rare sight...
They always have CH. purple. and dozens of others.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I may have some tomatos to share- couple each Sungold, an old German beefsteak, and maybe Mortgage lifter? I'll bring if I do.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cam--

I just read your intro Post...how did I miss that?

You wanted some Shasta daisies...I have a clump that is always
encroaching on my Day Lilies. I could dig some away and bring them to you.
These are hard to dig--as they are so tight-rooted. But--I can try.

LMK. Gita

Frederick, MD

Gita... Only if it's not too much trouble and only a few of them. Yeah, I had them at my last home and was wise to plant them 2 feet apart. Spreading buggers they are. Bloom profusely in full sun tho!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

coleup - got you down for the epimedium and tricyrtis.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I may have some tricyrtis to bring, too. Just have to wait till I get home and see. I had a pretty good sized stand of them last year.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Looks like my bee balm is coming back pretty well, enough to get some starts. I found at least one label -- 'Purple Rooster' -- will dig and pot a couple pieces if there's interest. :-)

editing to add link... it's not quite as blue-violet as the photo shows, but more purple than pink in color anyway. Walters has a bad habit of color enhancing their images; you can usually tell by the blue-green color of the leaves.

Holly, I'll take a piece of the 'Purple Rooster' monarda. Description says it is mildew resistant!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Mildew resistant can be a false promise. Raspberry Wine is supposed to be mildew resistant but does indeed have mildew late in the season. No biggie though as it doesn't usually come on until the flowering period is just about over and then you can chop it all to the ground and chuck it.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I'd be interested in a start of Purple Rooster too, Jill, if there is enough. Thanks.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh crap, that was Jill with the Purple Rooster, not Holly LOL. Jill, can I pleaaaasssee have a start of YOUR Purple Rooster? Holly, disregard my request. Where does my mind go, I'd like to know... Maybe Holly can find it while she is looking for Purple Rooster in her garden he he he.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, anybody with chickens needs Purple Rooster Monarda! LOL I'll dig around and see what I can do out there.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha!

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG, Holly--may I have some Lily of the Valley?

Jeannejayne--I love succulents, may I have a bit of yours?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I have added Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' to my HAVES. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54899/
aka Japanese Rush and Grassy-leaved Sweet Flag. Decorative sedge for moist areas.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I will put you on the list.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Carbird, I got you down!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I think I will have an extra one or two of these
Sungold tomato
Mortgage Lifter tomato
German Johnson (my 'aunt Jewel's German') tomato
Datura yellow double flowered

All just on their third or fourth leaf, still small, but rarin' to grow.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I might have a few extra tomatoes also, but I don't know what they are -- other than that they are heirlooms that do well in my garden. They're from the "carnival mix" of seeds I saved a few years ago... I got in a rush trying to sow before heading out of town and just grabbed the mixed seeds. Right now, all I can tell is that some are potato-leaf and some are regular-leaf. LOL

Coleup, may I please have one or two of your white Asclepias? And also a piece of black taro? (Is that the wonderful running one I had from you a few years ago? I lost mine this past winter... ) Thanks!!

Gita, do you have extra seeds in your stash for that Italian basil -- the one Theresa brought back from Italy for me many years ago? I've got some started for my garden, but now I'm down to just a couple of seeds somehow. They can be "old" ones, as basil seed seems to germinate fine for at least 6 years if it doesn't get wet. Thanks!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I am sure I do. They were in my big box--but I guess you had
too much else to do at the seed swap to go digging in there.

I will bring you a packet or two. They won't be more than 2 years old.
Want any Thai basil too?

Just wondering--Do you not collect seeds from the Italian basil when you grow it?
Remember--how I said that you can get 5 more seeds out of each of the "seed-nubbies"
using a toothpick? Yes! it is very time-consuming--but something you can do
while watching TV.
G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've got plenty of experience collecting basil seeds, but for whatever reason, I didn't collect seeds from the Italian basil last year... I think I didn't let it start setting seeds soon enough and didn't get mature seeds before frost. I thought I had more in my stash than it turned out I actually did when I went looking for seeds to sow in March. If I'd known I was low, I'd have hit up your big box! :-) I should be able to get lots of seeds this year, but I'd like to sow some extra plants to share around the neighborhood or with Joyanna's class.

I don't use a toothpick, though... I let the "nubbies" dry and then rub them between my fingers. I have a sieve that's about the right size to separate the large chaff from the seeds, and then I just blow off the dust-like chaff.

Thanks!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--I looked and I have plenty to share.
Will put several packets in a snack-baggie for you.
Anything else?????

I only grow one or two plants. Aina grows them in a big pot--as she makes
Pesto all the time. Hers grows really well. Like everything else.
eg--Frans Hals DL's. You should see her Montauk Daisies!!!!!!
Each clump is like an BIG Azalea bush. She cut them all the way down this spring
so the clumps would grow back from a smaller base.

Wanna try some of the red Rose Campions from AK that my sister sent me seeds of?
I WS them--but forgot to water--so--by the time I remembered--they did come up,
but are now still quite small.
These will spread--just like the regular RC's. LMK. Gita

More haves:

I have Peruvian daffodil bulbs. Neat flower but short lived, and doesn't bloom well for me, Still, if you're curious...needs plenty of water and food like others in Amaryllis family

Blue eyed grass, native, plenty

White bleeding hearts, and very small ones which may be white or pink, not sure at this point since white started showing up next to my big pink one.

Catnip
Oregano
Rosemary
Bottlebrush buckeye

Muddy I have some more little Juniperus for you.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, I'd love a rosemary!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

You had to say Bottlebrush buckeye didn't you?

Ugh, may I please be put down for one? LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Bottlebrush buckeye -- that's one of the smaller natives we were discussing recently, right? Sally if you have another, I'd love to give it a home. :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ssg- got you on a rosemary. I have one more rosemary.

Bottlebrush buckeye- David called first, Jeff, second, and sorry Jill, I only have two ready at the moment. The two I have ready are single rooted branches about 2-3 feet tall. It is very open in structure, and not small. My daddy buckeye is now 6 feet tall and wide, and starting to bloom well. There will be more down the road, there is another branch under a rock, and two rooted nodes (cut from a branch, no green) in a pot. And I just discovered that some buckeyes that I potted seem to be sprouting!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Aspenhill, Do you have another Epimedium 'Pink Elf'

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Muddy do you still have Canna 'Australia'?

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Sally!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes on the epimedium 'Pink Elf' Holly - got you down for it.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks that will give me 2 other colors to go with my yellow.

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally, some of the white bleeding hearts please. I am determined not to let the side yard get overgrown again unless it is from plants that I plant there! The yellow bleeding heart I got at last years swap died over the winter so if anyone has some they want to share...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SallyG, I'd happily take a sprouting buckeye if you have one. What conditions is yours growing in? I read that bottlebrush buckeye wants moist soil... and the spot I have is really more over toward the other side of the tree-line, where the soil is more dry (uphill rather than downhill). Actually, if it really needs moist soil I could put it under/near the crooked willow, in the other "local minimum" elevation of my yard.

ed. 'cause I didn't say "Thanks!!" (where are my manners??)

Aspenhill / Terri, I was trying hard to resist, but that name is just too cute, plus people keep posting epimedium pics... Do you have an extra 'Pink Elf' yet? If not, no worries!

Thank you!

I've probably got a couple Corydalis lutea (at least I think that's what we decided mine were) growing where they shouldn't be... but I don't know if that's the one you mean when you say "yellow bleeding heart," Catbird. ?

Gita, I'd love a pinch of those red rose campion seeds! I think I got some from you at the swap, as I seem to recall winter sowing them... but I'd like to try direct sowing them also. thanks!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I think that what was offered last year as yellow bleeding hearts was actually yellow Corydalis, Corydalis lutea.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think you're right, but somebody was posting recently about a different species of Corydalis that was also yellow... or I could just be confused. At any rate, I'll try to pull up some of my extras!
