Spring 2015 Plant Swap Discussions - PART TWO

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Backy, I can send divisions from a tall white and a tall blue SIberian iris that I got from you

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, if you can spare a second piece of that tall white SIB from Becky... mine hung in there for a couple of years but didn't take off, and this spring I don't see it at all. If yours isn't big enough, I'll wait!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Pretty sure I have enough Jill!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

PalmFlex is doing free shipping on the Atlas 370 garden gloves, either through tonight or tomorrow... (yesterday's email said "sale continues for just 2 more days" -- does that mean sale continues yesterday and today, or yesterday plus today and tomorrow?)

Anyway, that puts the price per dozen at $44 (single color) or $43 (mixed color) -- or less than $4 per pair. If anybody wants medium ones but doesn't want a whole dozen, I can always use pink or purple gloves in size M... just LMK. The other colors in the mixed packs are ruby red and green.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Sally! I think it had "wedding" in its name... I will see if I can find the marker. :-)

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

If anyone is willing to baby-sit seedlings until they can be planted in your garden, I have a bunch of native plant seedlings that I just added to my "haves" list. The size ranges from just-broke-through-the-soil to several inches tall; most are in 4-cell packs but some are in small pots. I'll put them on the "up for grabs" table at the swap, but I thought I'd post the list now so people can think about whether they might want some.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Becky---
Would you like some divisions of the Frans Hals Daylily? (see Pic.)

My daughter dug up these huge clumps. Not sure I will have any time to separate them--
it is like separating an old clump of Hostas...next to impossible.

Just saying--I may not be able to do it bu the Swap time.
Later? When is Chantelle planning to do the mailing?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, if you want to bring a clump to the swap, I will bring my "soil knife," a tool from AM Leonard that's a great help separating DL & hosta clumps.

Please note, i'm not planning on ordering gloves unless somebody speaks up for some.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill---You are already down for a clump of these. Remember?>/b> All 20lbs of it.
If you are dividing it--I am sure you will get more divisions than you can use
That is how you will be able to share this DL.

How are you planning on doing this at the swap?????
One needs to rinse ALL the soil off from these large clumps. This takes a LOT of time!
Then--with the patience of a saint--tease and tug until you have each division
loose. Each division will be at the base of a clump of leaves.
Cutting all this apart with a knife will , surely, destroy a lot of the clumps and
future growth of this DL.

If you plan to share this DL--then NO knife...please!!
Of course--the clump is yours, and you can divide it any way you see fit.

Gita

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Sally, that would be lovely!
Gita, a very small division :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I've used this tool to divide large DL clumps before, with minimal damage to roots. No worries! Becky, I'll wriggle off a piece for you from the clump Gita is giving me to divide for Martina. :-)

For several years, I've overwintered a large colocasia without a problem. The tuber got huge and I used it to cover up the large AC unit. I went to retrieve it from storage this year and it was completely rotted. :(

Does anyone have a large-growing colocasia tuber? Or something similarly tropical and fast growing? I have a large half barrel container for it.

Also, I have some delicate white-variegated hosta to share. It's very pretty but gets burnt in the sun.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ss, I have some sort of large leafed alocasia, I think we have even compared mine to something you had, or knew, light green, it still has two leaves from last year and the base is about five inches diameter. I could get a picture...it is in a pot ridiculously small for the plant but it lived in the basement that way and seemed happy as a clam. I'd be happy to give it. Then I won't be scratching my head over where to plant the huge Strelitzia.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Sally! That sounds great!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

The pointed leaf tops out at four and a half. Should be very big!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Haha, I see what you mean by the comically small pot! It should be very happy in my half barrel. :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

It was free in the soil last year. Remember the steady rain we had all year? In fall I pried it up, pulled off a pup, cut off (sadly) some leaves, and put the roots and a bit of soil in that pot. It literally went into suspended animation!
Credit to coleup, pretty sure she gave it to me in the first place.

By the way, if anyone DOES want that huge Strelitzia, speak up! Hasn't bloomed for me.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

It's Alocasia 'Portadora'. It's nice to see some babies I've shared over the years still around! Like the Hardy Banana mama I gave to Ric and Holly whose daughters now have shareable 'pups'!

I enjoyed my stint at the nursery that raised tropicals and semi tropicals and all the bounty they left me when they moved to Fla. Hers is the pic of how they 'landscaped' their house in Maryland every year with bananas and taros, gingers, e tc. I sure do miss the 200+ named varieties of coleus we propagated!

Hey, Istill have some Black Stem to share

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Anniversary! See, I knew it had something to do with weddings. LOL Thank you, Sally!

I think Strelitzia have to reach a certain age as well as size before they bloom... hang onto it for another year, Sally! Do you overwinter it semi-dormant in the basement, or does it need sunny window space?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Muddy, could you please put my name on some Asclepias perenis seedlings? Thanks bunches.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the ID, coleup!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Sure thing coleup!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I got five + hefty chunks of Iris 'Anniversary' out of one big clump. That is a vigorous plant and every bit of three foot tall foliage. It works really nicely as a grassy form plant that blooms. Enough for Jill, Bec, and more. And Becky, I got two nice divisions of a blue Siberian that you shared with me some years ago, too.

Yeah, jill, I suppose that is right about the Strelitzia. Its only a question of 'just how old IS this thing already, and how many more years to go? And do I really care at this point, if it blooms?

I still have the black Taro, it did verrry nicely on my moist western side. It can go there again since Portadora has a new home. Coleup, I still have a baby Portadora that DS took as a workplace floor plant, teee hee

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Who offered me some Raspberry starts? Sorry--I can't remember.

I asked for one of the starts for ME. If YOU have extra starts--I would love to
have a couple more for my daughter. If not--it is OK.

Gosh! the Swap is getting close.....G.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup--

I sprinkled many seeds of my saved Tropical Milkweed all over a bed several weeks ago.
So far--i do not see any seedlings coming up. I had envisioned Tropical Milkweed
growing all over it. I want to do my small share to help the Monarchs.
Already have oodles of Parsley and Dill planted.

What may I have done wrong??? How long do they take to germinate?
They are in a part shady bed.

If they do not--I will gladly accept some growing seedlings of it from someone.

Thanks--Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My thanks to Chris (CAM) who came over tonight and helped sort out the caladiums! I'm looking forward to chatting more with him on Saturday.

I stopped by Lowe's after going to the Y today -- and I scored!! I scooped up the rest of their hellebores and got them to sell them to me at $3 rather than $5 each as marked on their clearance tags. I may keep a few, but I think there will be at least a dozen more 'Pink Frost' available' as well as a few "lost tag" ones. I know Aspenhill wanted 3 if I got more, and I know Coleup wanted a few more -- who else?

I also picked up a bunch of $1 pink pots of wave petunias and some other goodies... I'm going to let Joyanna take petunias around to the neighbors for Mother's Day, but we could spare a few. I also have a big (2 gallon?) 'Early Sunrise' coreopsis for $3 (marked down from $13).

Last week I picked up a bunch of $4 azaleas, and today I got a few extras for $1 each. I'll split the savings on those with somebody -- I have three extras of a pink azaleas (they have a girl name that I don't quite recall, will check the tag) that I'll let go for half price, $2 each.

They have HUGE boston ferns for $8 and some only slightly less good looking on clearance... got a $3 one for my mom that just needs repotting and tidying up. I might stop by again on Friday...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I could NEVER buy so many clearanced plants! Unless I wanted some for ME.

The BEST I ever scored at a Lowes clearance were the Japanese painted Ferns
2 or 3 years ago. Yes! I shared them all....wish i could find that kind of deal again.

I guess at Lowes--what gets put on clearance is up to the Store/Garden managers.

HD seldom has all these clearances this early. Only at the end of the season.
BUT--I have made many of you happy by my astute observations.

They stores ARE all different! G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I'm pretty sure I have extra raspberries. I'll go check and reserve one or two for your daughter.

Jill, I'd love some Wave petunias! I'd like up to 3 pots, but I'd be happy with one. Please let me know how many you can spare.

Frederick, MD

Jill, it was a pleasure to meet you and help with the caladium sorting. Looking very forward to meeting more group members on Saturday!

And thanks for the tour of your arboretum... I mean... your yard. :) I think you have about 200 species of flowers/shrubs/trees around your home. Very nice !

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

200? I think you dropped a zero.

Frederick, MD

Yeah... my apologies, Jill, if I underestimated. Green Thumb may well be close than my estimation. :)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

CAM seems I'm a bit late welcoming you and all the newbees to the MAF. So glad you are jumping in with both feet. LOL I well remember my tour of Jill's environs and I know how much she has added since then! And she excels at sharing and passing along her bounty with family, friends, neighbors and dare I say everyone here.

Looking forward to meeting and greeting and swapping on Sat! I'll be the one with a head kerchief (sorry, Jeff) cause I can't stand wispy bits of hair blowing on my face, so I will be easy to spot! I have been advocating everyone planting some Milkweed for Monarch butterflies and other pollinator friendly plants. Please request your Milkweed plants so I can bring them to the Swap!

Frederick, MD

Thank you, coleup, for the welcome. I'll look for you and your kerchief on Saturday. :)

BTW, Annapolis is a beautiful small city.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Critter Yes, I still want at least 3 more 'Pink Frost' up to nine total. Hurray! Pink Frost helebore blooms are much more 'upfacing' than many cultivars.

I'm also interested in the three pink azaleas. Are they Olga Nesbitt ?
I'd also take the 'Early Sunrise' if no one else speaks up for it.
Thanks

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Judy---

If you have any Tropical Milkweed plants--I would like some.
Still not sure if the seeds i scattered will germinate. How long does it take?

I sowed them over this bed--as it is useless for anything else.
On the left--there are 3 or 4 clumps of Day Lilies that I grew from seed-
given to me by Nancy at a long ago Swap. Joyanna was just a baby then.
I also planted some Rosemary in there.

Here's my "useless" bed. Thought this would be perfect for a colony of
tropical Milkweed.

Gita's Butterfly Garden! See, you can find space when you REALLY need it. Hope the monarchs find you asap.

Coleup, 9 'Pink Frost' are yours, at $3 each. I'll check the tag on the azaleas... not 'Olga'. There might be an extra white with Delaware in he name I think. You could split the coreopsis into 3 good-sized $1 plants, so you'll get at least a piece of it!

SSG, you can have 3 petunias, no problem. I think most are pink but there could be a few white (not in bloom) in the mix. I picked up 22 of them, plus some in fat 6-packs to plant along the edge of my front bed once the muscari are done.

I need to download pics from my phone to show y'all... I totally filled my car, even by my standards of "full," then had to find room for a cart of groceries! Quite a haul for about $150, and with just days before the swap I knew I'd have no trouble finding homes for the extras. Since I haven't been much able to dig & divide, I figure cheap plants can be part of my contribution to our event. I got it all unloaded just as the rain came yesterday!

I actually resold 3 of the hellebores as I was packing my car, to a lady who was very happy to have them. :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I'm so excited about the petunias! What a deal! It's so hard to resist them at the nursery, so it's good to know I have bargain petunias waiting for me. :)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I nearly feel like I'll be there!! Someone better take pictures!!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

THAT is TOO FUNNY!!!!!!

Gita, I have four Tropical milkweed, babies from coleup last fall that I potted and overwintered. They are struggling but we can discuss and diagnose when you all get here Saturday. I'm happy to share them with you.

If anyone wants common milkweed, thug that it is, I should be able to find some shoots or root sections to bring. It is just coming up.

Maypop vines have not shown yet here but I am SURE they are lurking. DO not give up hope if you had one last year. keep your eyes open for shoots anywhere within ten feet of the original.
