Sweet potatoes advice?

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

So i have 3 Okinawan Purple sweet potato plants that i ordered planted in temporary pots (until the nights don't drop down into the 40's anymore). And i would like some advice about after they are planted and growing: Should i allow only the main root system to be my harvest point, or should i allow the plant to root down as it runs along the ground and create more? I have heard a couple of mixed opinions about either method. Thanks for your input.

Sorry, I can't tell you anything specific, but both me and my mother grow our own sweet potatoes mainly to eat the leaves. I don't know about growing for the tubers it self.

My mom likes to take the vines cutting and propagate in the soil, after a couple months and with rainy weather it basically grow out of control and take over the entire garden like a cover crop. They seem to manage pretty well in Florida hot sun, some mulching help and just a bit of watering each day.

For me I just bury two third of tubers in a container, not keep the soil too wet so it won't rot, and I get new leaves after 2 week, and just let the leaves climb up a trellis.

It's really a no fuss easy plant to grow. Conifer bugs like nest in them, but they're harmless.

interesting, i was under the impression that sweet potato leaves were a toxic part of the plant?
