I can't remember when it normally comes up, but all my other perennials have sprouted and it's still a big pile of dead twigs. I'm not seeing any sign of green from the mass of roots. Getting a little worried that it may have died off over winter! If it has, I'd like to know as soon as possible since we're doing a lot of landscaping and it'll be easier to try to and remove the root system now while the yard is torn up and plants aren't in place, rather than later. It's an unknown native variety and it's a volunteer - it got 13 feet high last summer and the base is a rock solid 15 inches across. We're in Ohio, zone 5B. Thanks!
When does Joe Pye Weed sprout in Ohio?
Joe Pye Weed is slow to sprout in Spring, but once it starts growing, it's a fast grower. Where you live shouldn't affect sprouting time as long as your growing it within it's preferred planting zone range.
Here are a couple of links you might find interesting.
The first one is from the Ohio State University Extension.
The second one is the DG main Search Page for Joe Pye Weed showing many different varieties. Just comparing pictures and reading the comments from members about each one should give you lots of info.

This photo was taken September of last year after the flowers browned out. It's a pale lavender pink when in bloom. I've never been able to ID which kind it is - I'm assuming it's native. It gets so much bigger than the photos and descriptions I've seen. It seriously reached just over 13 feet tall last year - I got the tape measure out and checked because I couldn't believe how massive it was. That's our garage on the right for scale.
Glad to hear that it may be too early in the spring yet for it to come back. I've been waiting a few weeks now to see signs of fresh green on it, but we had such good weather so early I wonder if that's why I'm thinking it should have sprouted by now. I'm so worried that it's going to die, because I absolutely adore it. I refuse to let my husband move it even though it's in a really bad location. Last year he couldn't get behind it to mow the grass behind the garage...
Wow, that's huge! I bet it's beautiful in full bloom and attracts loads of butterflies.
Theres a collection of honey bees, wasps, hornets, and butterflies as soon as it starts to bloom, and it's so high we don't have to worry about getting stung while we're in the yard. :D Even the hummingbirds enjoy it!
