I live next door to a big old abandoned cider apple orchard that was probably in its prime in the 1960s (some of the trees still do produce apples but the trees haven't been maintained and most of the apples are inedible except for a few pies-worth on a good year). Would this affect our ability to grow apple trees on the adjacent property? I know that new apple trees don't do well planted in old orchards, but I am wondering if it's an issue in the immediate soil or if this issue would cross over into our yard as well? (As far as I know, our own yard has never had apple trees).

Can I plant new apple trees next door to an old orchard?
If you are close enough for the roots to be in the area, that might affect your tree, but farther away should not be a problem.
