PlantFiles is getting a new look

Sulphur, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi, I am loving the updates. I do have a problem though. I have a couple plants listed in my haves (trade list) that do not list the name even though it is listed when I go to edit to correct. I also have Plant file pics that no longer match my plants, which they once did. Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks flwrsnflyrs1

Can you tell me the plant names in your have list that aren't matching up to PlantFiles now?

Well, after I clicked on add ad blocker to Google chrome, then a page pops up asking me to voluntarily pay from $10 to $35 for the service.

I think there are different ad blockers. The one I use is free - you can pay voluntarily, but I never get any popups asking for $$$

I agree with SallieKr - I have downloaded ad-block extensions for I.E., Firefox, Pale Moon, Safari and Chrome and if there was a "donate" button is was unobtrusive enough that I didn't see it.

I really like the changes to the plant info pages; having the pictures at the top is very nice. The other change I especially appreciate is being able to easily access the search functionality from any plant info page.

PS: Thanks for fixing the pesky ads issue I was having. You all are great!

Yes... love to be able to get to the search easily! I used that today to add several plants I purchased to my journal.

If you like these changes, we hope you'll like the next update and bug fixes tomorrow - stay tuned and we'll give you as much advanced notice as possible.

I just discovered the new Bookmark icon in PlantFiles...AWESOME!

I should actually be in bed already, but I was having too much fun in PlantFiles.

Okay, G'nite.

I have been using DG for my tablet and phone since l got them. Thank you for the update. It does look good. Will there be an app for DG eventually? And what about the Garden Watchdog? I would love an app for that!

Eventually the whole community will be compatible, but we want to get the kinks worked out of one part before tackling another.

OK I am a new smartphone user and pretty much clueless, Had my phone about a week. So I do I get DG on my phone? Thanks for this thread.

I posted this above already, but I'll repeat it for you :-)

Until there's an actual Android app for DG, you can create a browser shortcut on your home screen. I use Chrome on my Android phone (may be the same for other browsers.) Go to Dave's Garden- home page or Plant Files or whatever page you like. Tap the vertical "..." in the upper right corner and select "Add to homescreen". Edit the title to whatever you want- ex: "Plant Files", then tap the "Add" button.

Just to clarify, we do not have any plans at this time to develop apps for Androids or iPhones or other devices.

However, the changes we are currently undertaking will eventually make DG mobile-friendly, so you will be able to use and interact with our site pages with your phones and tablets without downloading a separate app.

SallieKr, I made a shortcut the way you described--so should there be a little shortcut on my home screen? It's not an app so it's not in "apps manager." Does it make it easier to go to DG?

Yes. It's just like saving and using bookmarks in your browser, except instead of a bookmark you'll have an icon on your homescreen. If it didn't create an icon, try again (I had to try a couple of times, then reboot my phone and try again. Android is flaky sometimes.) Is your phone Android or iPhone? I should have asked, sorry!

Oh, it's The Next Big Thing (lol), a Note 4. Thanks!

Then it's Android... If you have any problems, let me know. I've spent WAY too much time playing with both phones and tablets in the last few years ;-)

Th_e second time it worked! Thanks!

I am going to try it. I am not sure exactly how to do it, really. I save it on my computer, it just stays on there as I save the browser how I leave it last, and close the windows I don't want. This is on Chrome, not IE. IE has been too buggy lately. I had my desktop "lay fallow" for a couple of years, as the second modem in it died. That was on dialup. So I got a NetGear USB adapter to connect to my Android Mini hotspot for a connection. It worked great. Now I use Chrome for everything and do not update the computer. It has not been updated for 2 years, and I do not want to used my data allowance on that. I just don't update it anymore. So far, it has worked perfectly, after I stopped using IE.

Hmmm...if I may say..I don't like the changes at all...for me it looks also to busy to search for information about plants. I 'm sorry...I miss the REAL Plantfiles. Maybe it is easy for a quick look in the garden centre...but I don't go there so often...I've lost all fun to contribute to Plantfiles.

It's still the real PlantFiles - all the information is still there. There are more photos than before, but arguably that is an enhancement. (We all became accustomed to a pretty plain and text-centered interface, but with all the beautiful photos in PlantFiles, it's kind of nice to showcase more of them, and hopefully draw in more users who could use a little inspiration.

I haven't used DG much over the winter, and now coming back to these changes I find PlantFiles almost unusable. Is it my browser (Chrome), Windows 10, is it me, is it your upgrade, or what?

Opening PlantFiles, the alphabetical list of categories (cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, etc.) is gone and searching for them produces nothing. If a plant category is "popular" like tomatoes then a thumbnail is shown and I can click on it and go there. If a category isn't so "popular" (like cucumbers) there's no way to get there that I can find.

Once in the category, like tomatoes, the search feature doesn't work to locate a particular variety and the alphabet no longer appears, so if I'm looking for Big Boy I can no longer click on "B" and start scrolling and I can't access it by searching either. Further, only the first 25 pages of each category are accessible at all so most varieties just can't be looked up no matter what you do.

Here's how bad it is. To use PlantFiles, I have taken to exiting Dave's Garden entirely while staying signed in. Then I do a Yahoo or Google search for the plant variety I'm interested in. Searching through all the resulting hits, which are mostly seed company offerings, SOMETIMES one of the Yahoo or Google hits will be the PlantFiles page for that variety in Dave's Garden. When that happens, I can click on that hit and then I'm in.

How pitiful is that, and what is going on here, please?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Ozark, you can improve your search using plantfiles through google by also using the term, "davesgarden" without a space after the variety you want. You can also use "advanced search" in the upper right corner of google and specifically search for a variety specifically on "davesgarden.com" under the "site or domain" part of the advanced search. This should remove the other sites in a search. I hear ya' on the rest of what you mentioned. There is another more recent discussion about plantfiles here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1414447/
I encourage you to participate in that discussion.

Ozark, please go to the link that growin provided "status of PFs issues". Your post voices many of our concerns. Searching for stuff is almost impossible.

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

Thanks, growin. I'm on it, Lisa, I'll get after 'em right now. :>)
