Rain!!

Fort Worth, TX

it is gorgeous. Going out to bubblewrap the greenhouse. This isn't going to last.

Some of those big blue barrels tote tomato paste...

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know how much rain we got last night but the wind and rain were so strong that the noise kept me awake. Feeling it now. Today the weather was beautiful and stuff is sprouting everywhere. Lol

Iowa Park, TX(Zone 7b)

We got some of the big white barrels (50 gallon, I think) from a dairy. They had contained an iodine type medication that they use on the cows ( we washed them out a little prior to catching rain). They work great. Instead of putting faucets on them we use a sump pump and garden hoses to send the water out to the bushes and garden when needed.

We used betadine washes before milking- thats how mom discovered her iodine allergy, chuckl..

Iowa Park, TX(Zone 7b)

Dairies must use a lot of it considering how big the barrels are. Do they (people) use gloves when doing the betadine washes on the cows?

Watch out, here comes the wind and cold! : ) So many green tomatoes may never get a chance to ripen now. : (

Thanks for advice on rain barrels. Don't stop if you have anything to add.

Ok, Gypsi, I'll bite. You bubblewrap your greenhouse??? Show me a picture or tell me more. Please and thank you.

Fort Worth, TX

the bubblewrap is solar pool cover, cost me about $70 on Amazon but I am on year 2 and it is TOUGH stuff that lets sun's warmth in and seals up all the drafts in my homebuilt greenhouse. Photos later, lots to do today

Seems like we had a cup and just dipped their teats as we washed them. In bad cold weather we used Udder Creme- not the thin stuff they sell for our hands, and sent them outdoors all pampered. We had about a hundred milkers- x4 chuckl. So yeah, they go thru a lot. Its a wash, so their teats are disinfected and rinsed before milking.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Good thing women don't have to do that before feeding their babies!
A little lactation humor...😜

Iowa Park, TX(Zone 7b)

Yeah, especially in cold weather because the washing liquid would tend to be cold too - makes me shiver just thinking about it, but the cows get used to it I suppose.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

The water hose was warm. We had hot and cold running water to wash udders with- our hands are in there doing the washing! Ya don't want to upset the ladies giving milk! If the washing doesn't clean them the milker filters clog up, I never adjusted to city milk- too spoiled to sweet milk, sigh. I carry lots of stuff in drums. Wine, as well.
Home. Simple supper, French bread with a homemade butter/ cream cheese garlic type spread, baked potato and steak. A real steak- not those tasteless, bloodless ones I've seen lately. Yummmm

I want 10 acres. Where it rains

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We picked up 3.25" of rain overnight along with a cold front. It's pretty dreary out there! Great day to stay in and take a nap!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I completely agree. I didn't realize how cold it was going to get, but I get it now!

I am SO thankful I am at the house! Not much rain here, enough humidity and light moisture to damp sidewalks, watching a FB? Site named Livetrucking.com and seeing wrecks in that storm for northern states. Happy Thanksgiving folks.

I seem to have gotten almost 7 inches, well that is a guess, I had 6 inches yesterday. Haven't checked my guage buckets yet this morning. I drained 5 inches off a pond before the rain started and had that totally refilled plus it is running over.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We're about at a total of 6", I think. I just know we've picked up another 1.25" today. I emptied at least 2" from the rain gauge yesterday.

Got close to 8" in Rowlett. It's officially the wettest year on record for the Dallas area, with still a month left to go. Yowza.

We went back to see the folks in Georgia for a while (Thanksgiving) and passed through the storms that gave you all that rain. There were several wrecks along the way on I 20. Thankfully our son has an app on his phone so we knew where the wrecks and backed up traffic was - took the back roads and saw some really pretty countryside. But also saw a lot of standing water and overflowing drainage ditches (wonder where was all that rain back in August when the tomatoes needed it?) Oh well, I shouldn't complain, at least we are not in the drought now!

Iowa Park, TX(Zone 7b)

I should have said we were on our way back home (Iowa Park TX) when we passed through the storms.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Iowa Park- haven't been back there since I left Wichita Falls in 82. Rain is never when you need it, nor where...depending on weather was the reason for greenhouses...
I have seen the running water the day after I left Magnolia, Tx and went north thru Burleson and Everman. Creeks were banks full. Right now tho, all I see is freezing thick fog...30* in Scranton, Pa

ooooh, if you are driving in that fog please be careful!

Yeah, a greenhouse is on my list of gardening improvements! It would solve a number of difficulties with growing food in North Texas.

Why are you so far from home?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Part of what I do for last 31 yrs...no snow yet for me tho. Havent run anywhere but northeast last 3 yrs (Tx, Wis, Me and south to Fl. And back AgAin!)
