Nothing in Arlington either, I hope we get some soon.
Rain!!
I took residential wiring at Northlake college in spring 2011. I learned how the grounding system on my house was working, which is the electrical box was grounded to the metal pipes of my clean water piping - coming from the street to an outside faucet and in under the bathroom which is near the box. In fall 2011 my plumbing rusted out and blew up, I changed it to pvc. PVC is not an adequate ground, so while the plumber was estimating the cost of replacing my metal with pex, I and my helper were hammering that 8' copper rod straight into the rain softened ground near my foundation and the main electrical box, and meter. We used pure copper wire to clamp to the existing ground and the proper clamp on the rod. When the plumber said $2100 I wrote him a check for his time in doing the estimate and my helper and I spent 3 days running pvc under the house. I am a diy type. But why, well I took a lightning hit on Saturday and the damage was much less because I had an adequate ground rod
Gypsi, good to know.. I didn't know the purpose but now it makes more sense since you explained it.
Bariolo, will you still plant those seeds? I planted a few things for my kids.. but I'd really like to plant the root vegetales you mentioned and like to follow more experienced gardeners than myself lol
We got rain!! It doesn't look like we got a lot, but at least we got some. Hooray!
I got about 3/4 of an inch here.
We have gotten some but more is expected tonight. Yay!
Yippee, less humid! Well, I'd like to say it's cool, but not all that much...
Yes, I'm still planning to plant. We especially like fresh turnips so I'll plant lots of those. Beets never do great here but I keep trying! I also plant snow peas & tried sugar snap peas last year. They did well. Like lots of different kinds of greens too. I'll see what happens tomorrow. It's just hard to pull myself away from my new obsession-making jewelry! Here's more examples of my play!
I harvested my one and only cantaloupe, it was tasty, and pulled up all the vines. Considering planting some flowers that need seeded in the fall in that raised bed
This morning was the first morning that it actually felt cooler.
Janet, your jewelry is beautiful!
Gypsi, what kind of flower seeds are you thinking of sowing?
wildflowers always do best started in fall but they are too tall for this bed. Maybe crimson clover, near the fence maybe hollyhocks, and I will go through the rest of my seed packets and look for those recommended for fall starts. If I don't find any, the open bed where I had the cantaloupe will get wildflowers with a crimson clover border, and fenceline and garage line hollyhocks with more crimson clover (have to feed my bees)
2" of rain here in Dallas, if weather folks can be believed. And temp in the 80s. For a few days at least. Just taking a quick break before going back outside. Thought I'd check in here to see what's new.
We picked up at least 4.5" of rain overnight and into today. I had to empty the rain gauge before it overflowed. We've picked up more since then, but it's too dark to read the gauge now.
Not sure how much rain we have gotten but it has rained all night long. It's been a nice steady rain. I hope everybody else is safe.
We have 10 inches from Thursday and Friday.
Amazing!!
Wow, Josephine! We needed the rain, just not all at once.
Yes, that is a little too much, hopefully not too much damage.
I got between 8 and 10 inches overall, based on a couple of buckets I got out after one pond ran over, and it took at least 2 inches to run it over. Got 8 inches in the late out bucket.
water bomb here !!
My garden is ok, by my pet area was flooded. I had to go down in the mud 3 times to save my husband pets. All of them are safe. So happy.
My pet area has no grass ... because they eat everything that grows ... so the soil I just put down went down the hill ...
Just too much water all in once !
I miss the days of rain every couple of weeks in a rational amount. Wonder if that will ever come back.
I have never experienced rain like that in TX. lol
I have lived here since 1976? and I never experienced rain like that in West Texas, but that is a desert zone with mostly famine and the occasional flood.
I started gardening in Dallas in 1985, and I gardened all through the late 80's and 90's and except for a 6 week drought EVERY summer you could set your watch by (unless we got a hurricane and we were usually praying for one), we had a reasonable amount of rain every couple of weeks at least, and the only time the on/off ramps at 35E and Walnut Hill were closed for flooding was the fall of 1981, that I know of anyway
(the year following the great heat of 1980 as a matter of fact, and I believe Mount Saint Helens got the blame for that weather pattern)
Now it did rain for 40 days and 40 nights in fall of 1981, but I didn't have a rain guage, a house or a garden, and apartment dwelling tends to insulate one from noticing rainfall levels. I noticed because I'd find a semi to follow on the way to and from work each morning as the rain was so thick the windshield wipers didn't make a dent.
More rain today! I've only picked up about 1/2", but some places in the state have had lots of rain and severe weather. Stay safe everyone!
I seem to have gotten half an inch, but it has been very pleasant, on and off rain
Rained like crazy here tons of road closers and flooded rivers/creeks,. We haven't had weather like this in years.
omg ... water bomb again !
poured tonight!
We got 5 inches yesterday, a lot of water indeed!!
I got 5 yesterday and I had between half and an inch on Friday, so I think I'm good. Rather than trying to drain my puddles I am waiting for them to soak in. Should save me some watering on trees and foundation in the weeks to come.
We got 2.25" overnight and it rained off & on throughout the night.
It's not over yet, my friends. I wish it were so I could end a summer-long battle I've been having with a squirrel over just 1 of my daylillies. It gets planted, he digs it up. I replant, he digs it up. Thought I'd settled the score the other day but maybe it was the rain altho I suspect it was the squirrel that dug it up again. I'm picking up and trashing as many acorns as I can keep up with just out of spite. I'm really awful. The squirrel or one of his buddies is also going for some baby irises. Grrr.
Sure would be nice to plant a tree for Arbor Day. But don't think digging in the mud would be a good idea. It would be easier to dig, but still not a good idea.
I have live trapped and moved a squirrel. I'd like to catch about 6 more. The park by home depot will be the beneficiary
you know you could just give up and feed the little monster an ear of hard corn. it's what I'm putting in my traps as soon as I go to the feed store and get a bag.
The problem with feeding the squirrel and his buddies (5 or 6 in all) is that they will just want more and more and more. I've also heard that if you catch and release, that you'd better release them far, far away. Maybe it's just a myth, but I've heard that if they're close enough they'll come right back to the scene of the crime!
I treat them like bees, couple of miles usually does the trick
Its raining, again. I love the sound of it but wish it I could see the sun. Lol
started here around sundown, kind of intermittent but with thunder and lightning. Dogs are happy to be in.
We picked up about 1/2" last night. Waiting for today's rain, though it's been sprinkling since mid-morning. It's really a miserable day, not hot, not cold, just dreary, foggy, drizzly.
Stephanie, that discribes today, down here, perfectly, too. Blah! I can't believe the Mosquitos.
Finally bought a rain gauge and put it out yesterday. Might not be reliable b/c I had a hard time finding a spot where it wouldn't be dripped on by trees, eaves, etc. Now it's so far from any of my many windows that unless I want to put on the mud boots and rain slicker (the latter just in case), I won't be able to read it. And it's magnified! Think I'll get out the binoculars and see if they work.
Speaking of working, my gutters need help. And I had someone who was going to help but he flaked out. So if possible, maybe I can get a rain barrel. I have at least one or two downspouts that have to be replaced.
Anyone have any suggestions about rain barrels? Brands? Styles? Whatever?
I've already had to replace my kitchen faucet and have two other leaking ones repaired. The City of Dallas has a program where you can get 2 free toilets if you have old ones, and I do. But will still cost $$ to have them installed. Might have to get new HVAC system but hoping it was merely a sales job. And now my dryer is on the fritz. So why not go ahead and spend some money on a rain barrel? I'm thinking a good one will cost between $75 - $100. This is the one year when a rain barrel might come in handy. Or will it? Do they fill up really fast during storms and then become unusable b/c the plants don't need to be watered? Going to google now but would appreciate input from my Texas friends.
$20 or less for a big blue 55 gallon drum, takes a drill to install a faucet down low, and I cut the top off and screened it as I don't have gutters. don't know where in Dallas but a gravel yard in burleson is where I got mine. Be sure whatever it had in it before was non toxic
We got our rain barrels from a guy on Craig's List. They cost about $20 each. One smelled like salsa. LOL
We picked up 3/4" of rain overnight. It's a beautiful day today!
