I just finished applying Preen to my perennial beds. I've been reading about the use of corn gluten based products as a comparable "natural" preemergent. Does anyone here have any experience using them?
Thanks!

Corn Gluten Preemergents
I have not had any experience with it, but I do have 20 yrs of landscape training. The main thing with any pre- emergent is that it forms a barrier that seeds can't break through, so once you put it down, do not disturb the soil, or you just wasted your money.
Thanks OCCAROL. No soil disturbance planned:) I thought that pre emergents caused a chemical barrier in the individual seeds that prevented germination.
Actions are a bit different, but many pre-emergents disrupt the development of the root (which is the part of the seed that grows first). OOCAROL is exactly right about not disturbing the area once the pre-emergent has been applied.
I use Concern's Weed Prevention Plus (http://www.saferbrand.com/store/organic-lawn-care/97181) which has corn gluten meal in it and it's been working on keeping the weeds away. Keep in mind you have to apply it often especially if you get a lot of rain. Also it doesn't affect already grown weeds just prevents them from ever germinating as a seed. So the garden bed or grass area has to already be weed free and the plants you want should be "adults" so the corn gluten won't affect it.
