Flower beds? Empty Yard...

Weedsport, NY

Hello! So I bought my first home and my yard needs some life!
I been looking around the net and I stumbled upon this site http://www.flowerbeddesigns.net
I never planted anything in my life but they made it seem pretty easy to do..

My question is... What would you do to my yard? flower bed around the tree that just looks lonely in my yard... or near the fence?

What type of flowers would you put in?

Many Thanks!!

Can you draw the yard on a sheet of graph paper and scan it, and post it? Draw it to scale, for example, each square might be 1' (or 2' for a larger yard- this one looks pretty small).

Include things like the gate, the tree, the patio(s) and windows you would be looking out of to see the flowers. Also, include a North arrow.

Really basically, I would put shrubs against the fence. Showy is fine, but something that will always be there.
Seasonal color near the patios, and around the tree. Focal points where you look out the windows. Don't over do it, though. It takes a lot of time to replant new flowers often.

Here is a quick sketch of the concept, but it can look a lot nicer if drawn to scale.

A water feature can be a really nice focal point. I would recommend putting it close enough to the house so you can enjoy it from the patio and inside the house.
