I always wondered why the person who named the trees that bloom purple flowers a redbud tree ..Was he/she colored blind? lol
Why are they called Redbud trees?
I pondered that decades ago as well - I've never seen red blooms but maybe the new leaf budding out is red? I'm sure an expert in redbuds will be along and give you a good explanation.
According to this document, that is why they are called redbuds.

Exactly. The bud colors are from whence name comes - not the flower.
