Due to the excessive amount of snow this year many of the Knockout Rose canes have broken almost to ground level. Having never grown these before I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience and what the outcome was.
Knockout Roses
The sheer weight of the snow brought down the Roses, it happens with lot's of shrubs and taller conifers etc. Unfortunately all you can do is remove the whole plant, or plants, they dont grow from the single stems and the top growth are normally grafted onto single stem root stock..
The only way I have managed to save some of my shrubs is to go out with a broom and gently dislodge the snow from the bush / shrub or small tree. use the broom for the top and lower branches can be GENTLY shaken.
The other way to go IF you always get snow fall IF warned of a heavy fall, go out and build a Wig Wam structure, cover theis with clear plastic, secure well and soon as the snow has gone, remove the clear plastic,, make sure there is breath hole or twi encase the plastic is in place a few weeks, either way, remove for a little while each day if snow is continual.. Always check the plants are OK untill your free from snow fall. It works for me BUT I dont have snow for longer that a couple of days and it's my conifers that get opened up and I then have to tie the side branches back into place IF I dont protect them.
Happily for me, we dont often get these type of conditions,.
Hope this helps you out a bit.
Kind Regards.
WeeNel.
Your KO roses will be fine. It's likely those stems would have frozen anyway from the ridiculous winter we had. Last year my KO rose stems turned black and were completely dead on those parts. When spring bud break occurred, I trimmed off everything back to the first live bud. They grew back and flowered great last season. Those things are pretty hard to kill, you'll be fine.
