I have seen several different references as to where an upright yew can be planted.
I'd like to plant mine against the house where they will get morning shade and afternoon sun.
My concern is that in the summer it may be too hot, we are in the Boise, Idaho area and the
heat in the afternoon can be pretty extreme. Also wondering if OK to plant near septic tanks.
Upright Yew "Hicksii" sun exposure/planting
I've had yews against a brick wall (south-facing), and our summers are brutal and long down here in Tennessee. They're fairly drought- and heat-tolerant, in my experience.
They are also fairly slow-growing, but when you say "near" a septic system, that depends on what part of the system. We have learned the hard way to keep everything except grass and perennial flowers away from our systems (we've had two homes on septic.) Even well-behaved trees and shrubs will seek out water sources. And the deeper their roots go, the more likely they are to cause problems in your field lines, or even where the plumbing tees into the tank (we had to tear into one that a shrub's roots had snaked into a small hole, and grown rapidly over the pip, after we realized things were draining very slowly.)
So I'd urge some caution in planting "near" a system, unless it's near the far edge of your drain field, and it isn't a water-hogging plant.
