Can I cut off a plantlet growing halfway up a stalk of lucky bamboo without hurting the mother plant? Everything I watch/read about propagating them always mentions cutting the mother plant one node below afterward. Specifically, if I simply cut off the small shoots in the picture and leave the mother plant as is, will it be okay?
Also, is there any reason nobody seems to propagate lucky bamboo in soil?
Propagating lucky bamboo from a center node
Where it works out, I would use a very sharp and sterile tool to take a mallet cutting by cutting through the main stem 1/2" distal and proximal to the attachment point of the propagule. You'll have better success.
While this plant roots easily in water, the roots that form in water are physiologically very different from roots that form in a solid medium, so if you plan on growing on in soil, it's better to start the cutting in soil.
