I have a narrow space that is next to my garage that is crying out for something green! I'm in USDA climate Zone 8, the space faces due West, and is only three feet wide. Currently, I have a low growing ground cover called candy tuff growing here, but plan to transplant half of it so I cnan put something else there. Would a vine work such as honeysuckle? The space reaches as high as eight feet. This plant will have morning shade but will get very hot in the late afternoon because it will be against the house in the heat of the day on the West. I'm in Oregon, so our summers are short, but August days can get up to the upper nineties at times. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thank you.
Need Ideas for Plant in a Small, Warm Space
Hi Padfoot. I don't know about its cultural requirements (yet), but there is an Oregon native honeysuckle, Lonicera ciliosa.
I'm not that far from you, and on my west, no-shade side I inherited 4 very large roses that are thriving though were planted much too close to the house. But they certainly seem not to have minded the exposure before I got here.
When you say you have three feet of width do you mean you need something to plant in the middle of that three feet, or can you plant near the outer edge of that width, and thereby gain a longer list of possibilities? Something with up to a four foot mature diameter versus at most a two foot diameter.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
A few pictures of the location will help.
