Help! Lighting for Indoor Avocado Plants & Bonsai Trees!

Edmonton, Canada

Hi there,

I am a rookie gardener and I need help! I have three avocado plants that were growing strongly, but they are now in a basement with much less light available to them. They are starting to die, and I want to know what lights I should use for indoor plant lighting? I heard there are different wavelengths for specific things (i.e. red spectrum for flowering plants/fruit, green light for leafy plants, etc.?).

Can someone please give me some advice? I don't want the little guys to die. :(

(Side note: I live in Canada, where it is winter, so unfortunately I can't put them outside for another few months until it warms up.)
(Also, avo plant in picture is just a Google image, not mine, as I don't have a camera to take a good photo with.)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Plants use certain of the red wavelengths and certain of the blue.
Get a bulb that is specific for plants. To our eye it will look sort of pink-purple.

Plants use a lot less of the yellow and green wavelengths. But our eyes see these the best, so most light for offices and homes are more intense in this area.

I grow a lot of plants in aquariums, and I set up the lighting with one plant specific bulb and one 'Daylight' bulb so that the fish, plants and stones in the tank look right. They sure look odd with all 'plant' bulbs!
