I bought a bare root peach tree will the cold hurt it since I planted it this time of year it was already starting to leaf out in the store.
bare root tree planting.
I am not sure what zone you are in, and how much more cold weather you are going to have. If you do not get any more freezing weather it will probably be just fine.
I planted my barefoot peach trees when they had already sprout leaves in store well we had a couple of mornings around maybe 20s and 30s and some frost now the new leaves have shriveled and turn brown and the thinner branch's which where green are now turning purple will this tree live I heard these trees where hardy to zone 5 I am in zone 7.
That is not good. It may recover, and leaf out from deeper down. I think the outer twigs are probably dead. A new plant is a lot more tender than one that has been in the ground a few years.
Do not prune it yet. Wait and see if you get any growth, and then prune it just above some strong growth, removing the part that is not growing, or it just growing weakly.
Even if the tree is hardy to zone 5, that just means it will survive zone 5 winters when it is supposed to, while it's dormant. Other than evergreens, most plants will suffer from frost after they've started to turn green and leaf out. Your tree probably started leafing out while in the warmth of the garden center it was in; it probably tricked it into thinking it was spring. I would agree with Diana that the outer twigs are at least damaged, and could possibly be dead. Wait until after consistent warm weather to decide though, as they could come back. I made the same mistake with a peach tree last year that I bought from Maine. It had started to put out new growth when we got an extremely late snow in April. Knowing it could survive in Maine, it could obviously make it here in Kentucky, but after a plant has started leafing out or even budding, it becomes very sensitive to cold. My tree is still alive, but the top of the center stem was completely killed. If you get any more cold weather, I'd suggest covering it with a garbage bag overnight to protect it from frost. The tree should still live, but some growth will be retarded.
In my area Feb is abt the time to plant Bareroot trees, even if freezing weather is predicted. The key is that they need to be dormant.
Trees where dead so I just replaced them they started turning brown. Thanks for your help.
