peach tree sizes

Waynesville, NC(Zone 7a)

I was watching a man on youtube that said don't worry whether the tree is dwarf or standard he said you can make it the size you want by pruning. Is there much difference between the sizes Is the full size more cold hardy or disease resistance and does it live longer and make better fruit.

There is a significant difference in size.
The genetic dwarfs are very slow growing. If you want a small tree (large bush) then it is much easier to keep a dwarf small compared to a tree that wants to grow over 20' tall.

As for cold hardy, I am not sure if that is dependent on size. I think I would research the individual varieties that you are interested in. Find a few that thrive in your zone. Cold hardy is only one part of it. The requirement for winter chill is another. Early or late blooming is important.

I agree with Diana that there is a significant difference in size between standard, semi dwarfs and dwarfs. It is difficult to prune a standard into a dwarf and maintain good fruit production. it would likely require both dormant and summer pruning to achieve this.

Most key varieties come in all of the sizes. But in addition to cold hardiness, winter chill requirement, and blooming time is what kind of peach tastes good to you. Whether you prefer a white or yellow flesh peach, free stone or cling stone etc as well as any pollination needs.
