Morning Glories 2015 # 02

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That is a great deal on the new plants!
All we have is a home depot, and they do not have sales on plants, and they will not let you take home ones to rescue, they throw them away so they can write off the loss.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

thats great Jackie, you scored.! Golly, LK, that is just not right. throwing plants away.. *sigh*
Helena, did u get out to the GH yet?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Lk, I noticed that too about some of the box stores, throwing plants away instead of marking them down.

Gautier, MS

Pretty plants Jackie!
We have Lowes and they make plants down, I've bought a few from them.

I did take 2 water jugs to my gh and a few did need water bed. I need to get my g-kids to help me get at least 8 water jugs to finish the watering.

I'm not feeling too great, coming down with cough and sniffles.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hope you are feeling better soon. I hope it is not the crud that has been going around!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Hope you get to feeling better Helena.
I drink orange juice every day, so far its worked, no colds.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Helena, try zinc. I take a zin every morning. and a chewable calcium with D, a biotin, and a chewable C and a chewable B multi . Seems to keep the colds down, evry one at work is sick, and my son has been sick for three weeks. I paid to have him go get looked at and treated. HE ISN'T COVERED by insurance, so I am really worried about his back since he moves atms and gun safes all day.
I found my list of everything I planted Last year, so we should revisit the results. here is the list

Those are beautiful Debra.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, My daughter and g daughtr had that horrible flu. Wonder if they tested your
son to see if he might have it??
We swear by zinc too. Does seem to reduce the duration of a cold
Love your blooms from last yr.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Helena, I forgot to tell you I don't have to carry water to the g house any more. I have a 22 gallon rope handled tub I use. I keep it filled up as needed.
Would make your watering chore easier too. :-)

Gautier, MS

Pretty blooms Debra!

I'm a little better. Yesterday, I took about 10 jugs of water to the gh for my plants. It was a nice sunny day. I'm afraid if I had a barrel or tub with water in gh the water would be too cold. This way I make sure that it's neither too cold or too hot. Just a little bit longer and real spring will be here hopefully.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Glad you're feeling better Helena.
My g house is heated so the water doesn't get too cold thank goodness.
My gas bills are running over 250.00 a month. Ouch!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I'm glad we have some snow on the roof, it will melt tomorrow and fill my two rain barrels, then Joe will bring it in for me. I keep a 35 gallon tub of water with all the stuff in it for plants in the room by the furnace, so it stays pretty warm. The Rain water will be nice and warm too when Joe places the 3 gallon jugs in there. I am so tired of being cold. Our gas bill has been high too. No one wants me to lift over ten pounds yet, so get plenty of help. I defrosted the 35 yr old freezer today, it was cold enough out in the garage to hold the tubs of frozen foods overnight. So glad that got done this weekend, plus I even got my "corner" shelf on my side of the bedroom dusted. now I feel better.
Here is the "large tub" mix

Beautiful blooms in your large tub mix Debra.

Gautier, MS

Beautiful blooms Debra.

I'm glad you have heated gh Jackie, it helps.
Of coarse I not glad about your high gas bill. Ours is probably high too, I'm always turning up the heater in the mornings.

Ipomoea Ochracea flowered today. There are several buds to come, after only two flowers in November. It's her first winter, and I'm really glad she's doing so well.

PMM, welcome to the mg forum.
Your bloom looks like pandurata rather
than ochracea. Ochracea has a yellow bloom with a dark eye.
Can you re-check your pkg to confirm the id of your vine. .
Heres a picture of my ochracea in Jan of 2012
A pic of my pandurata July 2011

That is awesome.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

looks like it could be an ipomoea obscura, I can see the pale yellow.. I grew those and still have the plant in the basement. Even the leaves look the same ..

It is great to see it blooming in winter! ( what ever it is) good job there.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

My eyes getting so bad, I can't see the yellow in Pmm's bloom. I can see it however in my
ochracea. Debra, it might be an obscura if you can see the pale yellow..
Just a little worried about my eyesight here, time for a check up.

Göppingen, Germany(Zone 7b)

Well, I definitely bought seeds for I. Ochracea. The lighting for the picture may not be optimal, it looks a lot more yellow in reality. I played around with my painting program, and I'd say the correct color code would be RBG 255 / 255 / 124 ( HTML-Notation ffff7c). The other thing that screams Ochracea are the purple veins on young foliage.

As I pointed out in other threads before: It's plain, simple Garak. "pmm" is just a prefix I use because "Garak" is usually already taken in forums. It means "Planet Morrowind Modders" and points back to the time when I modded the Elder Scrolls RPGs Morrowind and Oblivion. by the way: Oblivion contains morning glory root pulp as alchemical ingredient, and I added Ipomoea Lobata in one of my plugins ;-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

wait.. what? Hi Garak!
I get you on the color with the photo.
I'm lost in ignorance. But I love Lobata..;D
my wild and crazy imagination makes me do this to my basement for vines..Jackie, we had a bloom.. and a momma yellow clematis tendral choked out her first bloom, so I released it, and saw a new bud, felt happy immediately. I have this 4 o clock blooming tonight. Wish I could smell it.

Oh well, too bad my eyesight wont let me see the purple veins in the lvs.

Debra your vines are taking over,
I hope'this is the yr I get to enjoy 4 o'clock blooms..
Love your 1st pic

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Looks like you will have a lot of blooms Debra!

Glad to have you sharing your blooms with us Garak!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well heck, a nice day, got 55 gallons of water ( snow) almost jugged up, dropping down to 11 tonght, had to get as much out of it as possible. Joe did a good job of lugging the 3 gallon jugs down to dump into the 55 gallon tub down there. Kinda like an outside faucett, you don't want to have water freeze with no where to go, so there is about a foot left in the rain barrell, we will see what happens when it freezes.
Helena, any blooms yet on your vine babies?
Jackie are you feeling okay? How was your temp today .
LK, how are those babies doing, did they survive the "vacation" drive?
Garak, was wondering what the temps are there. I wish I could go out of the country some time in this life. I have no clue what the temps are in any other country right this minute. I do try to bring other countries to me, tho. I buy seeds.
Here are some "other country" morning glory blooms..

Debra, I;m fine thanks .We had a wonderful 55 degree day before the bottom
falls out tomorrow. Sleet freezing rain and snow all coming in tomorrow Hope this will
mark the end of this horrible winter season.
Nice selection of other country mg's.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Most of the plants are doing fine except for the morning glory babies. They don't look happy. But I am trying my best. I have seeds from you if these don't make it.

Love those blooms!

Göppingen, Germany(Zone 7b)

Well, here in southern Germany it was quite a pleasant day for the season - Nights are still around Zero degrees celsius - I'll never get a feeling for Fahrenheit. Celsius is so easy: Water freezes at zero degrees, and boils at 100 - well, it would on sea level, the boiling point is very pressure-dependant. Anyway, the day saw a sunny 12 degrees. east winds, so it's rather continental climate right now, though that may change to moist Atlantic climate quickly. These changes are the reason why our weather is quite unpredictable - there may be late frost spells until may 15th, yet we may reach our first meteorological summer day (days above 25 °C) in the first half of April. That combination tends to be challenging for the garden.

Same will repeat in fall: first frost varies between 1st of October and 15th of December. Not easy to plan with annuals here, including most MGs

Here are some four o' clocks from last year I started from seed.

Those are beautiful Tony. Debra grows pretty 4 o'clocks. I can't remember if Helena grows
them too.

Really Pretty, Tony. I love them. I am pretty sure Helena and Dany grows them too. Nice to have night time blooms.

Göppingen, Germany(Zone 7b)

I just love those marble 4 o'clocks. I'll be trying Mirabilis Longiflora this year, as I read they'll be hybridizeable with the M. Jalappa.

Meanwhile I think I've solved the "yellow problem" above: I've had another flower yesterday. Both pics show the same flower, but at the second pic I just added a white piece of paper for the camera to do it's white balance, and here's the yellow I can see life. No more mistaking for I. Obscura in that one....

My mg's babies need to be untangled and into their own bigger pots but I don't really have the room in my gh.
