Dreaming of Spring and what to plant Zone 4-5

I want to plant some ornamental grass around my birch tree. I was thinking of Golden Hakone. It sounds like it doesn't grow very quickly. My man with the riding lawnmower is not going to wait long. Anyone in Zone 4 or 5 have any and how long did it take to "take off?"
