Crocus
What sort of a climate are you in? Crocus do well in areas that have some sort of a winter, even as mild as zone 8 (which is scarcely a wnter at all, by interior continental North American standards).
Around here the common crocus is available in the fall as a bulb. There are a few basic colors: White, purple, yellow and striped. They are pretty cheap. They are easy to grow, and in my zone can stay in the ground year round. I also see these growing in pots, ready to bloom, in the spring around various holidays like Mother's Day and Easter.
If you want specialized ones, like Saffron, they are pretty easy to order, reasonably available. Not sure if they are hard to grow, though.
Obviously, anything I say about gardening in California, such as what is available, or pricing has nothing to do with availability or pricing in India.
Yeah Diana_K.i cant find out that plant in my region.i cant grow them.... still i love to talk about.
I have spring crocus coming up now.: both species crocus and giant crocus came as corms (bulbs) and were planted in the fall 2014.
I don't know whether they're considered "hard to grow": I ordered them, planted the "bulbs" and now they've started coming up as described.
Here's a recent picture: (they are the wispy grass-like sprouts)
RubiNisha, like the other folks, I find them very easy to grow, for a small bulb ( the size of the tip of your little finger) they have truly beautiful little flowers and come in pale pastel shades as well as darker colours of bright orange/yellow, purple, and modern types come with mixed markings.
They are best grown in masses and to achieve this effect, you need to buy lot's of the bulbs and the area you want them to grow, you just hold a handful of the bulbs in one hand and stoop down lower to scatter the bulbs around the area you want the spring show, wherever the bulbs land, you just use a cane, make the hole and pop the bulbs into that hole, Hole needs to be only around 2 inches deep ( all bulbs need buried 3times the size of the bulb tip - root end) that's only a guide though. To scatter bulbs in this way allows for a more natural look rather than lined up like soldiers and you get a better mix of colours unless your growing ALL one colour.
A good place to ask about what plants will grow in your region is The Botanical Gardens, these places have lot's of specialists gardeners usually trained all over the world or at least have knowledge of more plants from different continents, OR try any parks departments where they look after any large parklands that the public are allowed to stroll through, it's
amazing the help the staff at these places love to share, IF possible, take a picture from magazine with you as many places might not know them as Crocus.
There are many on line companies who ship bulbs to most parts of the world as they have specialists licences to do so and for health reasons there can be restrictions as to shipping plants abroad, Places in Holland are the most famous for growing bulbs of all types so maybe search (DUTCH Bulb Growers) English growers too but the Dutch are the most famous and even they might tell you IF these bulbs will survive your climate /environment.
Hope this gives you some ideas and let's hope you can get a little patch of Crocus to grow outside or in pots.
Almost forgot to say, there won't be any Crocus bulbs right now as this is their peak growing season therefore you should never buy bulbs that are lifted while in flower with the exception of snowdrops, these for some strange reason are best bought when the dying foliage if still green, they transplant best at that time, you find them advertised as Snowdrops in the Green, best time for them.
Kindest Regards.
