Buddha Belly Jatropha

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Found a large one of these at a nursery left over from last years inventory. Brought it home and within days all of the leaves started yellowing and dropping. What should I do? I moved it out onto to the patio (zone 8a). Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Is it this one? http://www.jaycjayc.com/jatropha-podagrica-buddha-belly/

It sounds like your plant just lost its leaves for the winter. This is normal in places where it gets cold. No need for alarm. Water lightly during the dormant period and the plant will come right back when the light and temperature are right. Plant Files predicts the plant will not survive outside during a zone 8a winter... find it a bright indoor location to overwinter.

At long last, a reply. sorry not real good at staying up to date on Dave's. Yes. The Jatropha did indeed go dormant. It's huge and healthy now! Is it possible to harvest seeds from this?

Yes, if it has fruit. You might need another plant for pollination.

Mine flowers freely all summer and makes seeds easily. Pollinator? Must be a local. I have found volunteer seedlings and this spring I stuck some seeds from last year in some dirt and they germinated without any special attention. Maybe beginners luck.
They are an easy plant to keep. I bring mine in every winter and rarely water from October to March, maybe a splash every month. It comes back each spring and stays on the patio in full sun. In the summer I water it when ever it gets dry and it handles the normal Georgia rain just fine. I am not sure I have ever had one rot come to think of it. Its tougher than the Adeniums.
