Hi Anita, not sure IF your a member of Dave's Garden Site, But there are forums on the site for Bonsai growing /Hobby.

i personally have not done this type of growing though absolutely amazed when I see this type of plant growing by people who do it properly and do it well.
I have friends and my sister-in-law does Bonsai in her home in Canada, it really is a wonder at the type of tree's, the perfect shapes and th beautiful way they are shown, when you think of the many years it takes to train, treat and continually shape this style of growing.

There are books (many) on this subject, there are garden companies who sell direct to the public either pick / collect, buy the sapling/ baby tree / plants to grow on and they also sell the lovely decorated shallow containers that is required for the job.

All I can tell you is it takes many, many years to train a tree for Bonsai growing, you need to select the baby tree carefully as the type pf tree usually dictates the shape you need to train it into, the idea is to train the small tree over many years to have it look exactly how it would be when growing in the wild or garden as it would by natural shaping and growth.
The roots are pruned and re-potted back into the small shallow planter's and lots of attention must be given to this pruning of the roots, you also need to gently wire /bend and prune very carefully the top of the trees / branches to help get the right shape and leaf growth.

I'm maybe not explaining it as best as someone who actually does this type of gardening BUT lastly I have to stress, Bonsai trained plants are for growing OUT_DOORS, more people kill a bonsai plant by thinking they are so tender and need to be grown in-doors, they are NOT indoor plants. Like all tree's, they need plenty air, proper water, depending on type of tree, and they need feeding BUT there will be strict rules on all that as you also dont want to kill the plant with over kindness.

I know many people who are addicted to growing Bonsai tree's and flowering shrubs so there is lot's of info out there and it's just a case of finding it, dont be caught out with cheep products that are on the market as they are NOT reliable sourced tree's.
Go to library, on line by searching Bonsai suppliers, also look for established Bonsai growers clubs etc. these people will be able to help better than my who only looks on in amazement from afar.
Good luck, enjoy, and don't rush the process of Bonsai growing, it takes patience, time and several disappointments before you get the right growing conditions and training technique.
Best of luck.
WeeNel.
