I discovered this on our apple tree. Looks like some nasty things are boring in the trunk and branches. Any suggestions what it might be and how to treat it/ prevent it from affecting nearby fruit trees?

If you scrape off the orange goo, is there any damage under it? Can you take a picture of that damage?

The tree has been very poorly pruned, leaving stubs like that.
