Morning Glories 2014 #16

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

wow , Helena, you have a little factory going. Love that yellow flower, saw it was a higher zone plant than me here, dang.
Been working on seeds for a while now, got some special ones for you guys.
We had an earthquake nearby, my desk, chair and computer monitor was shaking for about 25 seconds, and I thought I was having a seizure LOL
Seems that the counties down by Oklahoma have about 7 quakes a week now a days. this one hit national news for us, not to mention the 11 temps, and it has been a cold cold week for us here and snow on the way this weekend. ugh.
I still have not been able to grow nicotanias, either.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, I hope I never experience an earthquake,
26 here tonight and a high of 40 tomorrow and for several days to come.
Unusually cold this early in the fall for us. Normal high would be 65. Not trying to'maintain
55 to 60 in my greenhouse this week, 48 wiill be just fine. Maybe I can save'some money.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie and Debra.

Debra, the yellow pea like flowers are the crotalaria. It's an annual and it blooms early fall, It can grow to 5 to 6 ft and bloom or grow from late gerinating seed at 2 to 3 ft or smaller. I sent seeds a few years back to a friend in Tennessee. They've grown it for several years, when I lost my seeds, they sent me a bunch back. This year I just picked a few pods from my first plant this year. I have plenty of seeds of those Jackie to share.

I don't know why but I could not get my nicotiana mutibilious (sp???) plant to bloom this year. I had a nice growing plant but then the mealy bugs found them and it got weaker and weaker. I tried the Listerine on my pepper plant for the mealy bugs, it kind of worked but the mealy bugs came back again, they are cared by ants. Guess I have to spray them again. Have them outside still. We finally got rain and very cool weather this am. we really needed the rain bad.

Heard on the news about the earthquake Debra and hoped it wasn't too close to you Debra.
Sometimes our homes shake here from the sonic testing they do in the Gulf. Kind of scary too.

Morning everyone, love the flowers you have been posting. I went to Michigan to visit my Dad and Sis for a few day, just got back last night. Looks like I brought the cold weather with me, as it is only 39 today, and is supposed to freeze tonight. So I had to bring in some angel trumpets and a few others, I do not want to lose! I still need to go see if I have any seeds from the morning glories and moon flowers.

Does anyone want seeds for the pride of barbado's? I have plenty to share!

Helena, the listerine spray is not like the poison sprays we buy. You do have to reapply it.
Nothing better than alcohol on a q tip to get the mealy bugs. The listerine is better on whiteflies and' spider mites. Neem spray is great for getting all the pests and for fungus too.
Linda, save me some sds although I have one I've been growing in a pot and its never bloomed.
Think I need to try one in the ground for better chance of blooming.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I will send you some Jackie.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Linda, much appreciated.:-)

Gautier, MS

Linda, glad you had a nice visit with your family. I have one Pride of Barbado's plant in the ground. Use to have 3 but the other 2 didn't come back. Thanks but don't need seeds, I collected some from my plants, large and beige seeds.

Jackie, I am so lazy about spraying my plants and now with this cold weather I don't want to spend much time outside at all. We did get a cold blast after the rain stopped. I still have to get a couple more big pots into the gh before it gets too late.

Guess I need to get started on the seeds.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Helena, I'm not getting much done this time of yr, doing good to just collect sds.
So cold here with temps just barely hitting 40 and the wind chill making it feel much colder.

Gautier, MS

Yep I'm still collecting one or 2 pods of seeds every other day or so.

I imagine that you and Debra have a lot colder weather than I. Surprising this morning is not cold at all.

Indica had a bloom yesterday and I still see lots of clusters of buds. Other than tropical still blooming outside, I do have salvias plants booming inside my green house. Keeping those heat lamps on until lunchtime if I have to.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Warmed up just a little but could have snow later. It wont amount to much they say.
Hope they're right.

Gautier, MS

Jackie, I know your weather is much colder than ours. It was cold, wet and windy yesterday, very cold and frost this morning but I think it's warming up a bit. My plants still have been protected by the big trees around the yard.

Can't wait till next week when the kids don't have to go to school. Hope to be able to sleep a little longer, but I'm a morning person so I dough it!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

We have had several mornings of frost on the cars, but my morning glories are still trying to bloom. The booms are small, but they are still there.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Brutal cold here last nite Helena. Maybe as low as 15 degrees.
I think our kids get out the whole Thanksgiving week here too. Thats a first, Usually they
have to go to school Mon and Tues of Thanksgiving week.

You should have sent us pics Linda. :-)

Gautier, MS

We had frost on the car windows and roofs this morning too Linda and Jackie. It feels awfully cold right now too, think it's supposed to be a real night and morning. Yikes 15 degrees is very now, ours might maybe go down to 27 tonight.

I agree with Jackie, Linda you should send us your morning glory pics!

Gautier, MS

Not as cold today, turned out to be a beautiful day here! Sunny and warmed up, I was able to get my salvia seedlings into bigger pots. They seem to be doing really good. Also noticed that there is more oranges than I thought there was.

Are your oranges sweet? My neighbor has two trees, and they are so bitter! No matter when you pick them!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Warmed up here too Helena the last couple of days. How nice it was.
Your Salvias looking good. Love the orange trees!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hay ya ll, sorry I been working too much and it has been crazy since it warmed up. I sure miss summer!
Wish we could grow oranges here. (I'd be lots warmer if we could) ;)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

These are the morning glories still blooming, They are small blooms, but still going!

wowLK, that is some fine close up there, love the little hairs on the stems you can see them. ;)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks Debra, I like how the first one has two tone petals.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Very good pics Linda. Cute litte blooms

Gautier, MS

Linda nice pics and blooms. Yes, the oranges are sweet navel, I haven't picked any this year yet but going to soon.

Jackie, I am so proud of my little salvia plants. I wanted to try growing oranges too when I saw that someone had a huge tree in the next town. I'm glad I did.

Frost was bad enough to get my hamelia patens and anything that not right next to the house.
So we are in for 3 months of winter.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Helena, I love the Salvias too.
My orange trees, including Kumquats, have to be wintered inside g house but Pomegranates
are
hardy here. You know I have a small pome but it looks awful. Should have been planted out early in the summer
to give it a chance to get big b4 winter set in. It's laying over in the pot like the spreading shrub
it wants to be, not even upright.

Gautier, MS

Jackie, I think I have a Pomegranates small shrub in ground but it never blooms, probably b/c it gets too much shade under the trees.

Also have 3 or 4 citrus small trees I got from Lowes last year and still have not got the in the ground. I'm just procrastinating here usual!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Helena, I do a lot of that too. Just too much on my plate right now, I pretty
much have quit worrying about it, you should too. :-)
Baby Hamelia patens stretched out somewhat, hope they get stronger now with room to grow..
My Prince of Orange with beautiful orange lvs.

Hi Gals, wow that looks pretty that prince of orange..your babies look cute, too, Jackie.
Got my fig tree in after it sat out in below 30 degree weather for a week, poor thing, but it is fine.
basement is going to be my heaven this winter, I bet it is a long one too.

Morning everyone!

Debra, your lucky to have space like that to have an indoor green house for the winter.

Gautier, MS

Jackie, your hamelia patens look great and so does your Prince of Orange.

Debra, love your yellow hibiscus too. We'll be looking forward to your basement garden blooms this winter. I grew up in my parents house with a basement too and it was very useful.

Turning out to be a beautiful sunny day here in MS!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Helena. What I would give for a basement like Debra's to store my plants in and not have to worry
about heating a greenhouse or making my way down there on a bitter cold night.
Something to dream about.
A wonderful thing to have when tornado's head our way. Would feel so much safer.

Gautier, MS

Jackie, I would love to have a basement too. The things we do to grow plants!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

No hope for me Helena. :-)

Gautier, MS

Me neither Jackie. It's all I can do is keep watering mine so I don't loose them.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

watering for me is a chore, but e stay on top of it with the rain barrells, when it is warm enough to collect water we jug it up, and they carry it all down for me. I have figured out how many gallon jugs it takes a week for each growing area. it takes 8 jugs each area. *sigh* I have 4 areas. I also keep a tub of water with a pump areator, full of old fish tank water, rain water and any water collected , with plant food and mosquitoe tablets going so I can refill the water jugs in a pinch. A few drops of tea tree oil keeps the smell pleasant and a qtr cup of peroxide really helps too .

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving,

Glad your family helps you with the watering Debra.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hope everyone has had a pleasant day, I know I have. Happy Thanksgiving to you all and aren't we so Blessed to be living in the USA. ;)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That is a lot of watering. I think I would hook a hose somehow.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Gautier, MS

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, ours was good too. Glad you all had a good one too.
