Overwintering strawberry seedlings

New Hempstead, NY

At the end of August, I planted some Alpine Strawberry seeds in a window box-shaped plastic planter. The seeds sprouted. I removed weed seedlings. The strawberry seedlings are now about 1 inch tall.

I live in zone 6b, and need to know how to overwinter the seedlings. Do I have to bring them inside the house (I hope not)? Or place the planters next to the house somewhere? Cover them with something? I'm aware that strawberries can't stand being heaped with leaves, which would make them rot. I figure that heavy wood chip mulching might make them rot also. The fact that they are in planters leads me to believe they may not survive the winter if I don' t do something.

If I am to do something special with them, when should I do it? Before or after the first killing frost?

Thanks for your ideas.

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

I am not in your cold zone, but I would suggest caution.
Researching the Alpine Strawberry suggests they are hardy in your zone when they are older and in the ground.
Containers can get a lot colder than the ground. MAYBE bring them in the house, but perhaps a garage or enclosed porch is OK? They would need some light.
How about a cold frame?
