my philodendron plant is several years old but for some reason this last week the leaves keep turning yellow and i havent moved it or done any thing any different to it what would cause this and how do i fix it

The first thing I would check is the root system and see if the roots have rotted. Just un-pot and see what the roots look like. If the roots are rotted you will need to re-pot with fresh, well-draining potting soil. Don't water though. Just mist the plant daily for a few weeks to allow new root growth. Generally rotted roots mean too much moisture, either over-watering or more likely, a too water-retentive potting soil. Be sure your pot doesn't sit in a saucer of water either.
Generally root-bound plants won't really suffer (they will just require more watering), but IF it is root bound, re-pot it into a slightly larger pot.
