S. CAlifornia grass alternative

Isla Vista, CA

Who in S. California is using a good grass-alternative for lawns with success?

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

Play area:
Synthetic lawn.
Leave the sprinklers installed, and when you want to use it as a lawn cool it off.

For looks:
Grasses allowed to grow taller, a foot-high meadow with the more drought and heat tolerant plants.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Here in UK there are many people using Creeping Thymus plants, they only grow to about 2 inches in height, they throw up a nice perfume when walked on AND, after flowering, you can run the mower over the whole lot of plants as like a grass lawn only your dead heading the plants.

I'm not sure about attracting more insects like bee's and other stinging bugs, BUT if shoes are worn, dont see the problem, children MIGHT like bare feet BUT if you have other hard pathways like gravel or sharp chipping, then that's just as dangerous as far as I'm concerned but hey, I'm too old to worry about bee's and other stinging things, you just learn how to avoid being injured.
Hope others come in with more ideas too.
Good luck and Best Regards.
WeeNel.
