Snowman wine glasses

Victoria Harbour, ON

ok gals, on the 8th DG Annual Christmas workshop thread I was asked if as I went along I could post how to do them, some of you have d-mailed me your e-mail addy so I can send the face tracing so will do that but not likely until Monday, weekend is busy/busy (the normal)

as not to confuse our floormat workshop with snowman info I have started this thread..

so here is what I have so far..

bought large wine glasses at the $$$ store, however, many have some hiding in their cupboards and are never used so why not recycle.

there are two products that can be used to frost the wine glasses so that paint will adhere to it

know many of you will say "but there is glass paint" believe me doesn't work on what we are doing

I still have some folkArt glass & tile medium which I love, it's brushed on, can't find folk-art supplies around here so the gals that are doing it here bought Rust-Oleum frosted glass semi transparent spray..
need to spray outside because it does have an odor but does a great job..am sure if rust-oleum is unavailable in your area any spray that frosts glass would be fine..gives tooth so that regular craft paints can be used.

so off we go on another craft adventure

STEP #1: wash glasses and dry

STEP #2: with rubbing alcohol, wipe the glass and dry

STEP #3: either brush on glass and tile medium if you have it (you will see when dry if you've
missed any areas)

or

spray with frosted glass and let dry

NOTE: believe it or not, if you intend on doing several I'd suggest you do them all at once
as you will be spending a lot of time waiting for paint to dry

Marking my spot to follow along!

Likewise. I know my daughter would like these.

STEP 4: Once completely dry you will need to give the glass 3 or 4 coats of country blue
or the likes..I just love the blue I've used

you will need to let each coat dry..of course I'm always in a hurry soooo
I put an element on and set them a bit of a ways away so they'd dry quicker

leave it to me

found some bells so went in search of a recipe for rusting them
made a container of 1/3 vinegar/1/3 salt and 1/3 peroxide
wondering how long it will take to rust or if they will rust..already the mixture is
black brown

Betty, are these spray painted? They look so smooth!

Ocean Springs, MS

That is a beautiful blue! Hope it's spray paint! LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

No, it's a cape cod blue, I put a titch of water in it as it makes it go on smoother..means might nead extra coat/coats but that's ok..

I've got another 10 that needs frosting, had hoped it would get done tonight but lordy, I've been half around the county this aft/tonight and now I feel I'm ready for bed.

Need to be up early to take Noah to work..nice having one on one time with him..
picked him up Chinese and let him drive my car home from Midland so he thinks grandma's grand!

Victoria Harbour, ON

here we go again, have a few more steps

STEP #5:

with tracing I will e-mail should any of you want it you will trace outer side of face with pencil

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

STEP #6:

with a light buttermilk (almost white) give several coats to the face you've just marked off..I had to do 3 coats to get good coverage..try not to leave too many brush ridges

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

STEP #7:

take the face feature paper that you've cut out and position it to the area you've painted in off white, slide graphite paper underneath, try not to move it, you might want to trace upper part then hold paper to the wine glass and move to trace bottom area

I really think you could free hand the face
why
because each will look different!

Step #8:

with a fluffy type brush (shown in photo) or perhaps a piece of flannel, put a dab of red then wipe and wipe until you think there is no red paint left then in circular motion put in cheeks

STEP #11

He's starting to come alive now isn't he???

don't worry if there are imperfections in the painting re base/face as by the time we get to the end he'll be adorable

now with an angle brush, good flat brush will to the same

I've shaded a bit of the lower section of the eye, if you don't feel comfortable doing this I'll provide an alternate method later

having fun?

If it weren't for the fact I have to get ready to attend a supper for my brother's 65th I'd have these finished

another day right?

STEP #13

STEP #14

believe it or not this brush was a flat brush, didn't clean it properly when painting so the hairs started to open..helped it along by dipping it in water, running my fingers across it and did same several times until the brush became fluffy

lightly dipping the brush into dark grey (can use a mixture of white/black to make the dark grey)
I stippled on the 1st coat around his face

Just found this!! How fun to follow along!!

Ocean Springs, MS

I can't wait to get started! need to get wine glasses and transparent spray. I have all the paints! Thanks so much , Betty! I'm making a "family" of glasses for Colt's family and some to give as gifts! :)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Joyce, now you get Cathy and Sherri one day and have a workshop..can't be there with you but I could watch..lol they so loved doing the floormats when they visited..did you all ever do another?

Julie, just change the faces somewhat..

I found that using the same pattern, just making a slightly thicker or longer nose, eyes smaller/larger, glint in different areas, different cheek rouging that once done none look the same..did send you and LindaKay face pattern as per your requests.

Ocean Springs, MS

Thank you, Betty! And I will change the faces on each one!

I have to make a trip to the dollar store later this week. Children are having a Halloween party Oct. 31, and I'm hosting my niece's baby shower on November 1. What was I thinking when I planned these back-toback? UGH!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Always the way
Have back to back functions all weekend

Ocean Springs, MS

True, Betty! At least the kids are having an outside party, so all decorations will be outside except for table!

You make this look so easy. I sure hope I can do it half as good as you!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

She does make everything look easy!!

I'm thinking of making them but haven't said anything to Kathy or Sherry yet. Sherry will be all poopoo I can't do it, but we both know she can!!

No, we haven't made any more. The summer is always so, so busy.

I've got a pot of Weight Watcher veggie soup on the stove. Wish it would hurry up!

I have trouble with lines because my hands shake, so I use a toothpick. Just keep dabbing it in paint and pulling the line. Works pretty good!

My daughter had her first doctor appointment today for her pregnancy! She came home and handed me the ultrasound pictures. I looked at them and she kept staring at me. I thought she already knew the sex of the baby, so I kept looking... Then I finally realized that there were
2 babies! She's having twins!!!!!!!!!!!! Please keep her in your prayers. She had problems with Elani, and they induced her 3 weeks early. This pregnancy puts her at high risk just because it's twins. I think I'm still in shock! But it's good! God has blessed us!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm embarrassed to ask, but will do so anyway. Are these for drinking, if yes, wont faces look upside down?

they are beautiful, I'm always in awe of people who can paint. I can't even draw a straight line...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Voosner, Decorative purposes only, tea light goes on top, same as the pumpkin ones we just did. I did paint thousands for different wedding, lastly roses and daisies on them and used products that glasses could be used, just not inthe dishwasher.

Congrats Julie..omg won't having twins be delightful? Prayers for their health.

Omg Joyce, remember how they said,no I can't, no I can't and yes they did. Lol
BrotherMike bought a cottage (later retirement home) in Wasaga BeCh..wonder if those hunks are still waiting for us to return

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Wow congrats. Double the fun.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL! Yes, they're always like that!!
