can i ask where you buy your supplies about garden?

Vista, USA Minor Outlying Islands

you know, you have a lot of stuff to buy for your garden, like row cover, shade cloth, weed barrier etc, so i wanna ask where do you usually buy your supplies about garden? a physical store or online store? and which store? thanks

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

I am fortunate to live where there are a lot of brick 'n' mortar stores from specialty garden and hardware stores to big box stores.
Still, they do not have everything, so I will shop on line for dry goods. The few plants I have bought on line or mail order have been disappointing.

Natick, MA

I buy a lot of my supplies like seed barrier, soil, mulch, perlite etc at the big box stores and would rather to give my business to the local small locally owned nurseries etc but esplly in the fall they are running out of things that the big box stores are not. I have bought my seeds on line and many plants but am discerning now that some purchases have been mediocre as far as size; I have generally paid less but for 3x as much could have gotten a huge plant 3x+ bigger. It's been a learning experience. Bought some plant markers and peat pellets on line-- Amazon due to price, availability and shipping costs. So I guess you could say I'm all over the place. I have a local small mom and pop nursery that I will be purchasing plants when they have what I want in the future (ie they take requests in the fall for spring) as they are wonderful as far as help, knowledge etc. and of course I have been enjoying wonderful trades with some great DG gardeners...is that TOO much info?

I buy all my soil amendments, mulch, and such at the nursery. Almost zero of my gardening supplies come from a big box store, unless I need a gardening tool, then that's another story. About 60% of my supplies like gloves, fertilizer, insecticides, fungicides, etc come from Amazon.com. If you look for the stuff with free shipping it's pretty easy and they ship fast without you getting out of your chair.

I found a great garden / Horticulture supplier, they were the cheapest around by a long shot, dealt with them for years as I mostly purchased bulk, but 2 years ago when I went on line to place a new order, they were out of the business, liquidated, I was really upset as the staff were very knowledgeable, could always recommend something other than my normal order,
I have done searches for horticulture supplies, or garden sundries / suppliers but they are so expensive, carry very little stock, and only AFTER ordering, find they are out of the stuff you ordered.

I have resorted to the garden centres (Way too expensive and normally poor quality plants with staff who cant tell a Daisy from a bucket, and sell the most useless quality of gardening tools)
I continue to search and hope somewhere in UK a new company that had the vast reange of products KAY@S offered.
As for plants, never had much luck from On-line ordering, I like to use small Market gardeners or family owned nurseries as these people NEED to sell good quality or they wont stay in business for long, they may not have BOG OF sales BUT I would rather go to a place that knows their products and gives you help, assurances and helpful tips AND will give money back IF the plants are not up to standard in the growing season. I also like to see the growing conditions the plants are cared for in, I see neither when on line.

Just be cautious, I know gardeners who complain about the least thing, no getting an answer on the phone or instead of taking the info given from the grower, they use aunty Fannies old wives tales, and then complain the plant died and so did aunty Fannies but she never mentioned that.
Just be fare when complaining about LIVE plants and know that there were instructions, make sure they will grow in your soil, temp, climate etc, Most small nurseries will be very helpful as thats how they earn a living, the D-I-Y store make there living from a wide range of goods from wall paper to Christmas decorations.
Good Luck and Kindest regards.

Hi timling-it sounds like you live on a tiny island on the other side of the Earth, and may need to mail-order supplies?
I try to buy from local businesses, but still end up ordering on-line.
Some mail-order companies to check out:

greenhousemegastore.com
charleysgreenhouse.com
leevalley.com
northerntool.com
gardeners.com
steuberdistributing.org

charleys and steubers are in Washington State, so shipping may be a bit cheaper if you are in the Pacific.
northern tool is not a garden store, but has all kinds of equipment, and is reliable.
leevalley will drive you crazy with all the cool stuff.

Good luck, and let us know how it works out.
