has anyone heard of trailing raspberries? Truly I am interested in any fruit with a trailing habit, as I have a space or two that could use a (fruit bearing) green curtain!
cheers

trailing habit fruit
Well, I know strawberries trail, and there are a few vines that produce fruit, though these are usually grown upward.
Does Akebia grow in your area?
Kiwi is a possibility, mine is flopping all over unless I do some training, tie it up a bit.
Grapes are generally pruned into an upright, sturdy trunk, then horizontal main branches. The rest of the growth can go any which way, including hanging down.
I think you should try Cranberries, they have lovely trailing evergreen growth and stay low. I think they will prefer a semi shaded location.
There is a Mysore Black raspberry which is shooting long canes arching on the ground. You can train the canes but you will have to prune them down every second year. And they are thorny but tasty fruit.
Dianne, I has a look at DG descriptions of akebia -- it grows too well, most Mid Atlantic gardeners report it as an invasive. Different story on your side of the Rockies.
None for me.

Always important to do your research!
Yes, many plants are not very invasive here because of the long dry summer. Akebia needs too much water to grow outside of gardens.
How big a 'curtain' of trailing plant are you looking for? There are probably a lot more vines that are possibilities, though not many edibles.
Hmm, yes, do my research and never import a new problem-- one poster said it was "worse than kudzu" ! Water does seem to make a big difference in what grows the pest tree we do not have is Eucalyptus, the one we have, Ailanthus!
I share a driveway with my neighbor. At the end of each driveway is a garage. We park our car at the other end of the driveway, especially in Winter.
I am looking to grow a curtain of ? some plant or plants that do not root too deeply of about 18 feet in length, because the neighbor has one less junk car than he used to have, but he has it, and he just loves it all the more because he had to get rid of the other one!
I am thinking of putting another shelf set (about 7 feet high) beside the one I have on our side of the driveway and growing the plant from containers of soil + vermiculite on top of the shelves.
Another idea is getting a plant that grows upward from planters at the bottom of the shelves, but having some weight on top of the shelves helps hole them in place during high winds.
Anyway that is my thinking on the green curtain. I have seen so called trailing raspberries for sale and wanted to check to see if anyone ever heard of them before I sent in an order.
cheers Heather
I think you will have a lot more choices if you can make planters lower down and grow vines upward. Plants in pots tend to dry out a lot faster, and there are not so many plants that hang down.
How tall will you want this? Is eye level to 1 story eaves enough? Or do you need it higher?
Is this a place where you can grow something wide? Or is it narrow? Would thorns be a problem? People walking nearby?
Edible vines or very narrow shrubs might work. A shrub or vine that can be trained to grow flat, a style called Espallier.
There are certain varieties of apple, called Columnar apples that would be an interesting and unusual screen in this setting. They do not grow very wide, but they grow fairly tall. Apples and Pears can be espalliered.
You might mix in some of these with some vines that grow wider. Perhaps grapes? In the growing season grape vines tend to spread pretty wide, sort of spreading out in all directions. Yes, you can control this, but it takes dedication to keep tying the new growth to a trellis or wire system. Same as most other vines: If you let it get away from you they will be all over the place.
How wide, how deep can you make the planters? (are you building planter boxes, or planting in the ground?)
