My hubby and I having taking up the task of up keeping the church garden. Some of the plants that I put in were started from seeds and cuttings, I am so happy with the Coleus and the Gomphrena and the Bachelor Buttons and I incorporated some Marigolds and Dianthus in the bed.

cytf, what lovely flower gardens! My only recommendation is to fill them with more plants and flowers.
Nancy Groutsis
Thanks for your comment DoGooder, this is my first year taking on this task so by next year I will improve on it for sure.
Ditto: More of the same, and mulch the soil in between the plants. Something really fine and neat.
Really enjoyed seeing your photos! Question: Your 2nd Post, first photo...what is the lovely purple flower there?
My suggestion: Use more perennials to make your job easier (less planting each year :o) )
valal, that is Gomphrena globosa, available in several intense shades and lighter shades of pink and purple, and white.
Globe Amaranth is one of the common names.

Ah, an annual...It's so large and lush, I assumed it was a perennial!
Thanks Diana!
Hi Valal, I have lots of seeds if you want to enjoy that lovely Gompherena
.I have a great joke about obtaining this plant I pick of a dry flower at the fence of a garden center. Research how to plant it and behold I have tons of it now. I sow it in indoors in the winter on the window sill and then put them under the grow light. I plan on planting some of the Cardinal flower in the Church garden so Valal you will be seeing your input to
It really is pretty! Maybe a few seeds??? :-) I'm trying to stay away from annuals and plan mostly perennials so they keep coming back!!!!, but it IS lovely!
I look forward to seeing updated photos of the church garden as you do your majic!
Val
Hey Cytf, it's great you are beautifying your church garden. I really like the message on the sign!
My only other suggestion than what has been mentioned is to either fill the garden with more soil to bring it up to the top of the block or remove the top layer of blocks. It looks nicer when the soil is closer to level with the top blocks.
Ok Sequoiadendron, next spring I will incorporate all the suggestions that I received and the garden will be even more beautiful. There is another garden at the main entrance but that needs a lot of changes as the person who was handling it before has back problems and we also took it over. I did not want to change it to upset her so next year I will do some major changes and show everyone. My pastor will be happy to know someone like his sign ,lol
Sweet, you should post updated pics next season :)
Hi valal, just got home I went to the dentist and made a few stops and planted four Cardinald flower plants in the church garden. We are expecting rain soon so they will welcome a good drink.Cytf
I like the rust mums :-)
What are the flowers in photo 2...pink with magenta center?
The 'flowers' in the second picture are actually the colorful leaves of Flowering Cabbage.
This is a plant that is edible, but is usually grown for the color of the leaves. They can be white (plant near the top of the picture) or purple.
They grow during the cool seasons, but bolt to seed as the days lengthen in the spring.
Interesting addition to a salad, too.
No I realize the cabbage is multicolored but there is a whole other plant to the right with shiny green leaves and pink flowers
Those pink flowers are Annual Vincas that were in there all summer. The weather is so warm in our region that the annuals are still surviving.i also put in some pansies recently.
Ah! I wonder if I already asked that! They are very pretty.
I cant add anything to all the other suggestions, I agree with lifting up the soil closer to the top of the wall, adding more plants too, I would possibly use some shrubs that give flower colour in summer and winter foliage colour /texture as autumn approaches.
What I have to say is a big WOW for all your hard work, your thoughtfulness, you and hubby deserve a good pat on the back, so many folks complain about an empty flower bed and no plantings to brighten up the place but, they never think on giving a couple of hours to make the area look lovely and bright, Well done and ask for donations to allow you to get more plants as the seasons allow for planting.
best wishes and kindest Regards.
WeeNel.
The common name is Vinca, the botanical name is Cathranthus roseus.
It is a perennial in warm winter areas, but is treated as a summer annual in most areas. It thrives in full sun, and heat. I have seen it listed as a house plant, too.
There are many varieties with different flower colors, almost all have a deep pink eye. The rest of the flower might be white, lavender to richer purples, pale pink, medium pink, intense pink (the eye may be white in this one).
Look for them in nurseries in the spring.
Thank you WeeNel for those nice comments, my hubby and I say this is our Mission. The President of the garden club that I belong to wants to add it to their on line site starting next spring.
Maybe you can ask garden club members to donate some plants when the split theirs
Yes we do share plants because one of the members is rooting fig plants for us.
What a rewarding project. I too is coordinating our Church garden beautification. this is the 2nd year but had had no time to post pictures.
We have every bed adopted. .
God Bless
Belle

Bellies...what a great idea...to adopt a portion of the garden!
Hi bellieg, we are giving back a lot to our community by beautifying the gardens.Post pictures when you have some time.
I'm so proud of you guy's, all of you, who said no one want's to get involved in helping the community,
well you have all proved that one wrong EH.
Just had a wonderful thought, wondering IF I could get volunteers to take over my garden it's 10 acres, lovely views and needs constant attention LOL.
Belle you just make me laugh out loud, you mention now and then how much work you have and then inform us of everything you manage to achieve, now you tell us your also taking on another project with the church Garden, BOY!!!!! there's no end to your exploits or talent. hope your keeping well.
Would love to see your pictures also.
Kind Regards.
WeeNel
WeeNel, if I lived close to you I will be helping you as my way of giving back to the seniors . At this time I am retired and is grocery shopping for one of senior friends and goes over and play cards with her sometimes. I keep very busy?lol
I added some daffodils and tulips in the church garden bed, hoping they add some beauty to the yard.
Wee nel,
Yeah too much on my plate but my husband helps a lot. I do hire to help me on my garden at home but at church i have lots of help.
I am meeting with Fr's assistant tomorrow, he wants to know what will be done this weekend.
I have picture of before and after and will be posting soon.
Belle
Hi garden buddies have you started work on the church garden yet?Hubby and I went yesterday and put up weeds and clean up all the dried mums stalks since we had a down pour of rain it made pulling weeds easy.To my great surprise Bachelor Buttons are up very high and Marigolds reseeded themselves and the Pansies that I planted in fall are blooming nicely .We will be taking a few days for a small trip ,so next week I will add some compost to the beds and put in the annuals since I had good results with my plants that I sowed indoors and they are all harden off and waiting to be put out in the gardens .
