So, my mom has given me a raised bed that she no longer wishes to upkeep, it is in partial shade seeing as our property is fairly wooded, so i was thinking what better plant to slap in there than Heuchera, seeing as its a part shade plant. So i have purchased a batch of seed that contains a mix of varieties, it has arrived today and i have some seed started in plastic seed starting cells. I am just curious if it is too late in the year to even be attempting this for my zone, if i should have just held off until the coming spring? (i still have plenty of seed leftover, so i would still have some to back myself up with). Thanks!
Too late to start Heuchera seed?
It is getting kinda late. If you can over winter them in the containers you will have much bigger plants to set out as soon as the weather settles in the spring. They will need really good light if they are indoors through the winter, perhaps a bright window with even a little direct sun.
i am expecting a 30 watt 5000K color temp CFL bulb any day now for help with seedling lighting. I have a south facing window here in my room too, although its only about 30" wide, thus my needing to get the CFL bulb.
Ive heard that its quite the challenge to keep heuchera alive indoors though, mostly because of its humidity needs. i may can get away with the lighting seeing as the sun is not as intense, and its a part shade type plant, and then just turn the bulb back on when the sun gets off of them.
Ive actually had quite a bit of luck keeping a coleus plant in here and doing well, i give it a good water misting several times daily, and it gets indoor sun from around 1PM - 4PM so perhaps i can do pretty decent with the heuchera. :)
(the viola seedlings to the right will be well out of here and planted outside by the time i need to bring in the heuchera, so there will still be some good room for them)
