Tips of growing Columnea Purpureovittata needed.

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Hi guys,

I am a newbie to planting.

I recently picked up a small pot of Columnea Purpureovittata from my local store. I have put it in a plastic container (as a green house :P) for about 1 week since I brought it home. But it doesn't look very good now. One of the leaves are turning yellow. I have been trying to find more info on this plant, but failed.
is anyone having this plant? Please help and tell me what conditions are good to the plant?

Thank a lot.

Zwolle, Netherlands(Zone 7a)

it needs high humidity, bright light without direct sunlight ( or filtered / partial sunlight if healthy and established) and warm temperatures...if humidity is too high and there is not enough air flow they also won't do well. It's a plant which needs to be pampered in order to thrive and develop flower buds. Aeschynanthus are more reliable indoors, Columnea is more ornamental with their over leaf shape and flowers but often fails in conditions were Aeschynanthus would do well.

i usually recommend planting Columnea and Aeschyanthus in one pot together.

Always check for pest like aphids , mites etc.

Thanks dude.

Thank for telling me about these. I just gave it a try to put it under the sun today. So I should relocate it and shouldn't put it in a plastic container neither.

Why do you want to put Aeschynanthus and Columnea together? Are they beneficial to each other?

Anyway, thank again.

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

Planting several plants near each other raises the humidity for all of them. They do not have to be in the same pot, but next to each other on the shelf is good.
If the light is good at that window, just too bright, then keep a light curtain closed so it is still bright but no direct sun. Watch out that it does not get too hot and dry in the window.
