For this hot climate, John Scheepers website recommends chilling bulbs at 35 to 45 degrees for 12 weeks before planting. Do I do this in the refrigerator? Is it safe for the food and/or the bulbs? Do they need to be wrapped or boxed in a certain way?
chilling bulbs for zone 8
I have done it without a problem. I just put them in a paper bag and set them in the fridge. Will your climate have enough cold weather to keep ongoing? I suppose that depends on what kind of bulbs they are.
Thank you, Cville, for responding. I have allium purple sensation bulbs on the way at the end of November. Brent and Becky's gave the impression they considered November the correct planting time. I may contact them about chilling the bulbs.
I'm interested, also, in possibly growing some lilies, but have not ordered any yet. John Scheepers has a beautiful collection of Orientals. By the way, they suggest amending clay soil, which we definitely have in Georgia, with peat and sand. Where does one get sand? Is this a product one can buy?
I don't think so. You will probably need to buy the peat and the sand separately.
