I have 3 hanging baskets of Hearts and Flowers (aptenia cordifolia) that appear to be in excellent condition. Solid green leaves and growing at a fast pace. Problem: none of the three have any blooms. They get 5-6 hrs of sun a day here in Las Vegas. I water them several times weekly- they are in pots with a hole to drip out excesses water. Any ideas as why they are not blooming.
Hearts and Flowers plant not blooming?
Aphpaphp, Im just NOT sure these are the ideal plant for hanging baskets BUT, I have never grown them here IN uk as they are far too tender,
There are differing views on them, some strains are very invasive, some are like rockery plants, while others are perennial with flowers that remind of the bright Pink Asters of my Grandmothers day.
They come under the names of Baby sun Rose OR Heart Leaf Ice Plants ( the later as far as I am aware is the more invasive type and dreaded by many gardeners who plant a little nice looking flowering plant, then before they know it, these nice little plants begin to run rampant (How come the plant we want to spread don't Eh!!) Lol.
I think you might be able to do a plant search here on Dave's for ID of this plant AND maybe even more info re soil type and where best to plant.
Sorry I couldn't help you more But folks in CA could come on to help you out. here in UK it's 12:15 lunch time and most of you lovely folks wont be up and about yet, the time difference depending on state is 7-9 hours.
Best of luck and kindest Regards.
WeeNel.
Aptenia cordifolia ought to be blooming for you. I have seen it bloom in more shade than you are describing, and would be leery of suggesting more sun in your hot location.
Perhaps some fertilizer with low or no nitrogen?
