Greetings all,
I left a couple of radishes in the ground from early summer in order to take advantage of the edible flowers and seeds pods. I also wanted to harvest a few seeds. Unfortunately, everytime Iook at my radishes, the bulbous part seems to get bigger and bigger. My radishes are crawling out of the ground like some creepy zombie vegetables. Yet, there is not even a hint that it will flower. Each radish has a handful of leaves that look healthy. I know that the soil it's growing in is not very rich, but the radishes were pretty tasty early in the season. Do I need to add fertilizer in order to get the flowering started? If so, what kind? I have a bag of organic tomato fertilizer. 10-4-6, I think. Would that work?
I feel especially incompetent since I shared the same radish seeds with my dad and he said his flowered before he even knew it. He didn't even get to eat any radishes. This was a month ago and he planted after I did. We live only half a zone apart.
A related problem, my English thyme won't flower either. I had read that they have pretty purple flowers that bees like. I was looking forward to those. :(
Thanks for any advice!
radish won't flower
Radishes tend to flower with increasing daylight. Spring planted radishes will flower readily if they are stressed even before they bulb. Radishes maturing after the summer solstice will be much more reluctant to flower if at all. When over wintered they will flower early in the spring. It also depends on variety.
Great info. Thank you. Maybe I'll just harvest these and try again next year. :)
