This should give you the information your looking for. Good Luck!
Sorry the whole link didn't load. If you type planting Amaryllis Belladonna in the search bar it will give plenty of information.
Here is CA (no snow) the bulb is underground, but barely. Over the years it gets larger, and multiplies, and seems to mound itself out of the ground a few inches.
In my garden it gets covered by leaf litter each year, so I have not actually seen the bulbs since we replaced the nearby fence, and raked away the leaf mulch. The mass has many bulbs, and is over a foot across.
They don't like buried too deep, I was always told to allow the plant to be half in the soil and the top half out of the soil and as Diana has said, mulch when the flowering season has passed to prevent cold nights chilling.
Here in UK we grow them as indoor plants and after flowering, allow the foliage to die down turning yellow , dried or brown before removing it, they are very easy to grow IF conditions are right.
Good luck and enjoy those lovely flowering bulbs.
WeeNel.
