Stephanie they should grow back if he left the roots alone. They'll probably even bloom next year, if not later this fall.

Bariolo, looks like leafcutter bees.. I had them doing the same thing here last year, but no sign of them this year. I learned that they use the circles to line their nests so I feel good knowing it's for a good purpose! Here's a neat pic from google, he's flying the rolled up leaf circle presumably to his nest! Love it :)

I was going to say grasshoppers but you may be right about the bee.

Save me some seed please for the Grandpa Otts. With my fuschia double heirloom, I might could get some dark purple doubles. Wouldn't that make a beautiful fence.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Wow that grandpa otts is a real stunner!!

Lisa, I think some guys can be spiteful on purpose. Sounds like you are lucky to have him outta the picture!! I do sometimes wish my hubby was interested in helping in the garden and flowerbeds though.. the most I can ever get him to do is pee on the compost heap! LOL

Just when I was wondering if this plant was worthwhile, this Night Blooming Cerius just has me hooked. Most of the year it just sits here, not very special but an interesting shape. Then in a weeks time buds appear, it blooms for one night, and then has the most interesting fading bloom. Pic # 1 is the bloom, Pic 2 is the bloom closing, and pic three is the fading bloom. Pic #4 is a closeup of the fading bloom. Unfortunately this year I totally missed the blooms. Wasn't blooming at 10:30 p.m. when I went to bed, was closing up at 6:30 a,m, when I went out to the patio. Pic #1 is from 2013. Does anyone else enjoy this weird plant?

I don't have it, but it sounds very neat.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I have a nice stout one and in the past people have stopped by to admire when in bloom. This past winter it died to the ground and I was heartbroken/ scared it was done but it has returned. This is an easy, great plant to have but I learned the hard way it needs winter protection in z9a.

That cereus is beautiful, bezziec 😍

Walking to high school in Hawaii, I'd pass a rock wall everyday that was COVERED in this plant!! I mean over a hundred yards (it seems that way, but I could be wrong as that was a long time ago). Supposedly it was planted decades before that. It was Punahou, a private school, and when they were in full bloom it was beyond RIDIULOUS!! This is one of the plants that takes me back to my youth in tropical plant heaven. That and my great grandmother's fence that was literally dripping with stephanotis blooms..

I'd even encounter this cereus while hiking mountain ridges, growing wild. Boy sure do wish I had appreciated how special all that was while living there!!

Attached some pics of the Punahou cereus. Just googled it and the old black and white photo is circa 1900. It was already well established, wouldn't you say ;)

SPWD--Nice pics. Do you remember if those had a wonderful smell? If so, it must have been intoxicating with that many blooms. I couldn't detect much smell last year when I caught the one bloom. Then this year, all four buds bloomed the same night while I slept. Bummer!

Vossner--Mine stays in a pot (although I have to upsize it fairly often) and goes into the greenhouse when it gets about 40*.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Have to clarify, those pics aren't mine, they're from a google image search.

I don't recall much of a scent, maybe a faint sweetness. But I never got up close and personal with them during their peak time in the wee hours either.

I think I'll ask my mom if she can send me a few cuttings from it. I'm sure she'll ask the proper people first. Me on the other hand, I'm a snatcher! LOL! Just kidding folks, don't get worked up! 😁

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7b)

Can you tell me how wide and tall is your Pride of Barbados shrub?
Looks wonderful.
I got 4 seeds off a tree and planted them immediately. All have germinated.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I have never thought of it as a shrub till you mentioned that. The first year I planted it the drought almost killed it, then two years in a row my son took it out with the brush hog on the tractor. I admit that it does remind me of the seedy bean trees we try to eradicate, that is until it starts blooming. So mine doesn't look like a shrub, it grows about 4' tall and is airy, kind of like a crepe myrtle with a couple trunks and foliage near the top.
I'm guessing that they are about 4' across as well, but they obviously don't mind being trimmed. No one but me on the tractor this year, maybe next year I will get to see how wide it gets.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7b)

Thanks. That sounds manageable. Nice to know it can be chopped down without any problems.
I will plant some as a 'hedge' and trim the others as small trees.

Montana, Rosebud. Looks kinda scratchy-ish

Nice view Kitt, I agree it does look a little crispy! Funny, when I think of Montana, I envision majestic mountains and squares of green farm fields.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I have one of those night blooming plants. I know the bud has opened bc it smells so good. It doesn't bloom every year.I don't know why. The last time it bloomed it had five flowers total. Maybe I need to up pot it.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Today I realized my Sweet Autumn Clementis is getting buds...isn't it a little early?

Becky, that's not the only reason I'm lucky to be rid of him lol.....he has another "victim". I'm shocked what people will do just to avoid being alone, its sad. But that's for another thread.....lol I feel 250lbs lighter.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Hmm no idea how to get it to bloom, but I bet a potting up wouldn't hurt. Wonder if it would respond to a bloom booster fertilizer?

I've never grown the Sweet autumn clematis, but have some seeds trying to germinate right this moment.. I'm considering keeping it indoors (is this even possible?) as I've been warned it is EXTREMELY invasive!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Sweet Autumn Clematis is blooming here too.
Yes it is extremely invasive. I have remove mostly of mine ... but still is popping out in some places. Normally I wait until it finished to bloom then I will try to remove the entire plant. Its root system s just so strong !

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Nice tip drthor!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I didn't realize it was invasive and I've never had a problem with it being invasive. I have one plant that is huge but it hasn't come up anywhere else. Im thankful for that. Still seems really early.....this has been a strange year..

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think a lot of "invasives" have to do with your soil health and temperature conditions. Glad it's not taken over your yard.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Well the migration has started and the four hummers that stayed for the summer are not happy. They don't like sharing their food. Boy will they be surprised in a couple weeks.

rouxcrew
these are fantastic pictures.
As soon as my Turks Cup starts to bloom hummingbirds arrive in my garden.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks. We have about 20 now, that number will jump exponentially in the next few weeks.
We have a lot more flowers this year and they are going strong even though it is August.

Seems early? Wonder if the drouth or cooler weather swings are to blame?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Seems early to me as well.

Becky Jr - Those are fantastic pictures from Hawaii. I like yours too, Bezziec. When I lived in Austin I had many night blooming cereus plants, almost all were in hanging baskets. We'd have late night parties to watch the blooms open. It got to where we had multiple blooms on multiple plants. The buds would start to slowly open around 11:30, midnight at the latest. Once fully open they would release a wonderful fragrance. (Also attracted some most interesting large moths.) When the sun came up the blooms would close and eventually fall off, as captured in the pics provided by Bezziec.

Now I'm learning about the different types of epiphyllums (a cereus is a type of epiphyllum or maybe just a 'kissing cousin') and am trying to start a collection from cuttings. I never knew that there are many many day blooming 'epis'. As I understand it, the day bloomers are hybrids and most aren't fragrant like the night bloomers. But these hybrids come in sooooo many colors and color combinations. The only color that they don't come in is blue.

Tomorrow I am going to get all my cuttings potted. I swear I will. First thing.

Bezziec - Epis like to be a little root bound so don't upsize it too often. At least that's what I'm learning.

Vossner - I am surprised that yours returned after it died to the ground. Glad it came back.

1lisac - Maybe you need to feed your plant if not doing it already. They are notorious, however, for being slow starters. Can't remember how long it took ours in Austin to get with the program! From what I'm learning, the hybrids aren't quite so pokey.

So happy growing to those of us with these weird yet wonderful plants.

More color from thru garden, orange this time. Monarchs and queens are emerging daily.

Txflowerchild which plant are you referring to? I have so many I can't figure out which one you are referring to. Lol

It seems early for the hummers to me migrating to me too. The population here still seems about the same and they are still fighting over the food.

N3L? Has your crinum survived?

Arlington, TX

I tried to kill it but it's still coming up. It's under the pond liner do it will have to stay where it is.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Chuckl- take them a few years to bury themselves deep enough to not come up

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Tall pink & purple Mexican petunias. The purple one will have to go, I'm sure. LOL
Esperanza is ramping up and looking lovely.
Liatris mucronata (fall blooming) is starting to bloom. This one is trying to beat the pack, so I can't wait to see them all in bloom. I have them contained in a tomato cage or they get very floppy.
My coneflower graveyard is seeing some new life! Hooray! They will need to be thinned out and moved, though.

1Lisac - sorry, haven't been on DG for awhile. In answer to your question, which by now you might have forgotten that you asked, I was talking about your night blooming plant. That was back in mid-August. Should also have said that they like to be fed.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks tfc, I figured you were talking about that one. Its in a pot so I can bring it in during the winter. I could try feeding it. Haven't done that in awhile. Lol I just water it ever so often.
