Long blooming, low growing perennial

I use lots of annuals for color to fill in spots in flower beds of perennials. I am hoping to find a low perennial to put in the front of the beds to take the place of things like begonias, impatiens and vinca. I think if I had 2 of these low perennials, with 2 different bloom times, I might get the pops of color I like. I live in Zone 7. Any ideas??

Have you thought of groundcover instead - I put in Ajuga "chocolate chip" and "burgundy glow". We have others too that give us color even when not blooming :)

I love the Burgundy Glow - leaves are so pretty!

You will have to research zones.
Penstemon 'Margarita BOP' (the BOP stands for Back of Porch)
Iberis sempervirens (there are named varieties)
Salvia nemerosa, S. x sylvestris (There are MANY varieties)
Hemerocallis hybrids (Dwarf Day Lilies) (Big ones, too, but the dwarfs seem to fit your request better.
Heuchera (several species, many varieties)
Bunnera (several varieties)
Alchemilla mollis
Aquilegia (several species, many varieties, look for the more compact ones)
Armeria maritima (several varieties, and some related plants)
Dianathus (MANY)
Oxalis (Leaf color, as well as flowers)

Thanks for the list above. I am leaning to some low phlox, the penstemon, some dianthus and aqluilegia and then some sedum

Lemon drop is a nice low growing perennial and it easy to make cuttings from it. I purchased 2 plants this year to put in the church garden that my DH and I are maintaining, and it is branching out and blooming nicely . Two pieces broke of and I stuck it in my raised garden bed and it took roots very well and I am having extra plants.. I am thinking about putting them in my front yard border together with my yellow coreopsis plant.

Do you know the botanical name of the Lemon Drop, cytf? It sounds like a winner.
