Pomegranate

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

My pomegranate tree was about 10 ft. tall and finally was producing many poms. Unfortunately, this past winter it got cold enough to freeze it and all the branches died to the ground. Now I have many small branches growing up from the root and my question is..how many should I leave and how many should I cut back?? Would this be the right time for trimming back these branches or should I wait until late fall? It took 5 years for the plant to start producing and now I am wondering if I will have to wait another 5 years..

Sure hope someone is knowledgeable about the poms and can help me out..

Thanks, Kris

This past winter had low temps that ruined a lot of southern trees.

I don't know if pomegranate is grafted on a rootstock, but if it is, you're out of luck. Anything coming up from the ground will be from the rootstock & not the grafted tree.

Maybe someone else can help you with your problem.

Actually the sprouts are coming from the stumps left after we cut the dead branches. I don't think its a grafted tree anyway.

Hoping someone will pop in with some advice..

I would leave about 3 well placed branches, if you want it to grow as a multi-trunk (its natural shape).
If you want to train it into a tree with just one trunk then select the straightest and just keep that.
