Some that have some real meaning to me are Loretta Lynn's Christmas with out Daddy and Alabama's Santa Clause I still believe and Tonight is Christmas. I love that whole Alabama Christmas CD its great.
Favorite Christmas Song
Angels We Have Heard On High - That may not be the title but you know which one I mean. All Christmas music makes me cry. I can be in the middle of Walmart and the Christmas music starts playing and I start crying. Not to the upbeat stuff but the old ones...Silent Night, The First Noel, etc....vic
My favorite ones of a religious nature are Ava Maria, sung by Pery Como, and Panis Angelicus,by Placido Domingo.Of course,no one can sing White Christmas like "old blue eyes"
You are so right, Ginlyn! Jo
I knew if I read enough of these somebody would name it.. I'm great with the songs, bad with names..
Handel's Messiah . :)
Thanks Kelly

I love the sound of the harp. Such a beautiful sounding instrument.
CoCo - If I knew how to send some of the tracks from my cd, I'd send you some. The CD is called Lori Pappajohn's Celtic Harp for Christmas. It has most of the classics mentioned here. What Child is This is my favorite.
Amy Grant's "Home for Christmas" the whole CD:) and God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen, but done in a very upbeat by a group of Christian contemp artists. If I lose that tape, I'm gonna cry.
OH!!! then there's Christmas in Sarejevo (sp?) I can't get enough of that, will start playing it Thanksgiving night, and I can never sit still when it's on.
Silent Night with Aaron Neville singing. He sounds like an angel.
Mine is a song i heard a man sing in our church when i was a kid. It always stuck with me but i am not sure of the name. It was about a Christmas Rose, and that may have been the name of it. Does anyone know of this song?
"In the Deep Midwinter" written by Christina Rossetti and set to music. It's the kind of song that any farmer could understand.
Ladystepper, Lo How a Rose, it's an old english song
I have a lot of dulcimer and harp tapes and i love the Winter Solstice set from Windham Hill.
I love to hear music boxes playing the Christmas songs. I only have one cd so far, but I hope to find more this holiday season.
mystic you mentioned Alabama. I remember the first year they came out with CHRISTMAS IN DIXIE I just could not hear it enough.
I have two favorites both by Kenny Rogers
Sweet little Jesus boy and When a child is born.
But for the old time standard it would be Silent Night at our candle light mass on Christmas eve.
We will start this weekend getting things ready as this is the only weekend we will have free till after Christmas.
The light and trim will be a week early, I usually start the day after Thanksgiving.
It comes so fast and is gone in a flash, but Christmas is my favorite time of the year.
Mike
ladystepper I have a cd with a song Christmas Roses. I'll hav eto listen tomorrow and see what it sounds like. Do you remember any of the words?
bitty1, I doubt you scared them off! I can remember in fourth grade wanting to play the violin. It never happened, proably better for everyone!
I went shopping tonight and picked up Charlotte Church's Dream a Dream CD - anybody else have this one? I've got the "chills and bumps" all over me.
Jim I remember when Christmas in Dixie came out too. I liked it then and I still do.I Like all Alabama's songs.
Thanks for all the help guys! Now I am on a misson to find this "Christmas Rose" song. It isnt "low how a rose" i know that one. I mostly remember just the tune(its been a long time ago), but i do remember part of the song says something like, "When blossoms flowered amid the snow, was born the christmas rose". I think that was in the chorus part though. I tried to find it on the internet but no luck, it must be called something else and just has that part about the rose in it. I am gona write my mom and have her ask that man if he is still around. I never heard that song since then, so it must not have been a traditional song. He was the choir director and this was a solo he did, so it may have even been something he put together. I will try to find out. Thanks for your help!
Is this it?
Hymn: 'When Blossoms Flowered Amid The Snow'
Words: P. A. Yon (1926); Tune: GESU BAMBINO
I found that reference here: http://www.ufmcc.com/advent3.htm
I like "Kulkuset kulkuset", "Kodin kynttilät", "Valkoinen joulu", etc... Finnish names aren't maybe too familiary for you?
I'm not keen on Christmas, never have been but I do like traditional hymns. My particular seasonal favourites are:
Adeste Fideles (O' Come All Ye Faithful)
The Holly and the Ivy
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Good King Wenceleslas
All Through The Night (really an old Welsh folk song)
Can't believe no one has mentioned Manheim Steamroller. I know it's a group, not a song, but it's a feeling too:)
We have 3 Christmas ones (I think, or more) That's what we keep in the cd changer from Thanksgiving to Christmas. (along with the one that has Christmas in Sarejevo on it)
Thats It!!! Thanks go_vols!!! I guess it is also known as come let us adore him, or gesu Bambino tune. After you gave me the name, i was able to do a search on yahoo & listen to it again. Thanks so much for your help & for everyone elses that tried to figure it out for me.
You're welcome - I just did a search with Google using part of the phrase you remembered. It popped right up :)
Larkie, Anne Murray has a Christmas Album out. I don't know if it's new this year, but it's great. I also like O Holy Night and Sleigh Ride. Melody, I love Aaron Neville, too. Do you remember when he did that ad for the cotton institute, "the touch, the feel of cotton, the fabric of your life." Bitty, I like that "Do you Hear What I hear, too" ONe I learned in High School when I was taking French I was "Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella," but I'm not sure that's the name of it, just the first few words. Would love to see the rest of it and the translation for all of us.
How I could leave out 'BEAUTIFUL STAR OF BETHLEHEM' by The Chuck Wagon Gang is beyond me. I think this is my favorite as far as words and 'Christmas Time Is Coming' is for the tune.
SLEDDER I really appreciate you starting this post. I got involved in the search for the Rose song for ladystepper and a version of 'Go Tell iT On The Mountain' for farmgirl. I spent the whole day yesterday looking at my albums and cds and tapes. Really got me in a GOOD GOOD SPIRIT.
I was watching the Alabama and Auburn footcball game and saw Joe Namath that played for Alabama way back yonder. Yeh girls he's the one that did the panty hose commercial also. Isn't he from your home town?
Namath was also the quarterack for the NY Jets. It was a fairly new team at the time and they won the Super Bowl. That's what made him so famous. He was an unbelievably good passer and was pretty darn good at making passes at the women too. He also owned a nightclub in NYC called Broadway Joe's. But he had nightmarish pain from an old college football injury and his knees would often swell up terribly. I think he had surgery several times during his football career. They would often drain off fluid with a long needle, a very painful process. This eventually shortened his career. I remember him saying that he'd be in a wheelchair by the time he was 50 but that was before knee replacement surgery. I don't know what they did, but he's moving pretty good.
*sigh*
Oh dear, Sledder - Beaver Falls is only known for Joe Namath. Somehow, I would rather it be known for Geneva College, or for good _nearby_ public education (*grin*)- just not football. :(

Yeah woodspitit1 I guess that did make him famous to the rest of the world but in these parts he was already famous. Auburn lost to Alabama 9 years in a row and I think he was the QB in 4 of those. We hated him. LOL He also predicted that the Jets would win the super bowl and if I remember correct that was the first time a team from the AFC won a super bowl. I was also a Packer fanm at that time so he went right from college to the pro's beating on me. He was good and I really think now he has settled down and I really respect him as a person. My son played QB in high school and his senior year had to have the knee drained usually on Thursday before the game on Friday. It was painful.
Music is my first love. It's in my blood. That's why I'm always looking for new Christmas songs. This thread has helped me considerably seeking songs that people like to hear during the holiday season. Pull out those old albums, cassettes and cds and seek the music that helps "the mood".
I haven't seen one of my all time favorites.
"GRANDMA GOT RUN OVER BY A REINDEER" by Elmo and Patsy
Paul
My Grandson never hears the old childrens songs we did...like..."Up on the house top...click, click, click", or "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth", or, "Darling Old St. Nicholas". Now if I could just recall the words I'd sing them to him...thankfully he's still young enough to THINK I can SING! Jo
Melody and Woodspirit1 Aaron Neville rendition of ' The Grand Tour' was one that I had to rush out and by before they sold out. I think it was George Jone that had the same song out and I am a country music fan from way back. I mean I have songs from when the Grand Old Oprey first started. One being 'Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy' now that's country. Aaron put George to shame on that song however.
Mystic I guess I have loved every song that Alabama has recorded. My favorite is 'Angels Among Us.'
tink, I only started watching this thread Friday night, and would you believe on Saturday night, Blue Hawaii was on TV on TBS?
Well I love the Little Drummer Boy, I just love to try and sing but it seems I do more crying than singing lol but I still try.
"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord"...that doesn't mean it has to be "in tune"!! (smile)
The old saying "couldn't carry a tune in a bucket"...if you can't carry in tune? Carry around a bucket!! "T" :)
The old saying when a door is closed God always opens another is really true. I emailed farmgirl that I had a copy of 'GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN' on an album and I would make a copy for her over the weekend. Well I got everthing set up and I guess the needle has gotten messed up somehow so that left that out. I then started going through all my cd's tapes and albums trying to come up with it. I found a cd by Garth Brooks that had it listed on the cover. I opened the cover and the cd was gone. My 10 year old grandson got a cd player last year and I think I gave it to him because he is a big Garth fan. I don't know why he didn't get the container. Well I had to go to Walmarts today and I went in through the garden entrance and there was a large display of cd's. I started looking and was about ready to give up and here was a cd with it on it and one that I have been trying to find for my wife a long long time. It was by Mahalia Jackson. Two doors closed and another opened. And ain't it just like God to reward me by finding this while doing something for someone else. I think I know why the needle was messed up an Garth was gone. FARMGIRL you will be getting your tape. I guess God wants you to have it. Jim
