Dark Gray in ground caterpillar? with black diamond pattern

Hi - digging in garden plot superficial, not deep. One inch big. Healthy, dark gray, looks like leather! Black diamond pattern down back. No other telling details (horns, dots, stripes, feet). any idea?

diamond back.... uh.... rattle snake-caterpillar?

Perhaps search a site with Lepidoptera of New Jersey in the title.
