Can anyone venture a guess as to what these may be? They have a leaf like a squash, but a little like a watermelon. The skin is smooth and the vines are very prickly. One of the others is dark green. They were volunteers out of the compost soil and are growing everywhere! Also, we don't have a clue as to when to harvest!? Thanks for any suggestions!
What's your guess?
I think it is a squash
concur; some type of squash, probably a pumpkin cross.
Thank you!
The first picture is a pumpkin. Good looking pumpkin at that.

You are very welcome. I think it likes your compost soil.

Lol!-that's funny-I TRIED to grow pumpkins last year and it didn't turn out well. Seems like I have better luck with volunteers :)
Great - Whatever works - go for it.

How is your pumpkin doing? Is it orange yet?
It looks like delicata and pumpkin.

Brenda, I just saw this. ALL these volunteers (I had 4 in all) ended up being pumpkins! The largest already bit the dust, I'm going to use the next largest for an arrangement, filling it w/mums or something. They were all pretty pumpkins, just too early :( Thanks for your interest though! You were right!

Good guess-pumpkins they were!!
Maybe you can carve out a space in the pumpkin and find just the right mum plant and slip the whole thing down into the pumpkin. Any way that you do it, it will be beautiful. Pumpkins make a great looking vase.
I think Farmerdill gets the credit here.
